Psalm 40
NIV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionNew Living Translation
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.1I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.2He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.3He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.
Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.4Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.
Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.5O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.
Sacrifice and offering you did not desire-- but my ears you have opened -- burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.6You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.
Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll.7Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures:
I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart."8I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”
I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, LORD, as you know.9I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know.
I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly.10I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.
Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD; may your love and faithfulness always protect me.11LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.
For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.12For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.
Be pleased to save me, LORD; come quickly, LORD, to help me.13Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me.
May all who want to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.14May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace.
May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame.15Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!”
But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, "The LORD is great!"16But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!”
But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay.17As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay.
