| 1A psalm of Asaph. The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets. | 1The LORD, the Mighty One, is God, and he has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets. |
| 2From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth. | 2From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance. |
| 3Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages. | 3Our God approaches, and he is not silent. Fire devours everything in his way, and a great storm rages around him. |
| 4He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people: | 4He calls on the heavens above and earth below to witness the judgment of his people. |
| 5"Gather to me this consecrated people, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice." | 5“Bring my faithful people to me— those who made a covenant with me by giving sacrifices.” |
| 6And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for he is a God of justice. | 6Then let the heavens proclaim his justice, for God himself will be the judge. Interlude |
| 7"Listen, my people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel: I am God, your God. | 7“O my people, listen as I speak. Here are my charges against you, O Israel: I am God, your God! |
| 8I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me. | 8I have no complaint about your sacrifices or the burnt offerings you constantly offer. |
| 9I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, | 9But I do not need the bulls from your barns or the goats from your pens. |
| 10for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. | 10For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills. |
| 11I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. | 11I know every bird on the mountains, and all the animals of the field are mine. |
| 12If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. | 12If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for all the world is mine and everything in it. |
| 13Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? | 13Do I eat the meat of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats? |
| 14"Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, | 14Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High. |
| 15and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me." | 15Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.” |
| 16But to the wicked person, God says: "What right have you to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips? | 16But God says to the wicked: “Why bother reciting my decrees and pretending to obey my covenant? |
| 17You hate my instruction and cast my words behind you. | 17For you refuse my discipline and treat my words like trash. |
| 18When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers. | 18When you see thieves, you approve of them, and you spend your time with adulterers. |
| 19You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit. | 19Your mouth is filled with wickedness, and your tongue is full of lies. |
| 20You sit and testify against your brother and slander your own mother's son. | 20You sit around and slander your brother— your own mother’s son. |
| 21When you did these things and I kept silent, you thought I was exactly like you. But I now arraign you and set my accusations before you. | 21While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn’t care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you. |
| 22"Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you: | 22Repent, all of you who forget me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you. |
| 23Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation." | 23But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.” |
