Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.1We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward,2For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every transgression and disobedience received its just punishment,
how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,3how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?4and was affirmed by God through signs, wonders, various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.
For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels.5For it is not to angels that He has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.
But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him?6But somewhere it is testified in these words: “What is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him?
You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands.7You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor
You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him.8and placed everything under his feet.” When God subjected all things to him, He left nothing outside of his control. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God, for whom and through whom all things exist, to make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,11For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.
saying: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”12He says: “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers; I will sing Your praises in the assembly.”
And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And again: “Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”13And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And once again: “Here am I, and the children God has given Me.”
Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,14Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil,
and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham.16For surely it is not the angels He helps, but the descendants of Abraham.
Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.17For this reason He had to be made like His brothers in every way, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, in order to make atonement for the sins of the people.
For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.18Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.
