Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.1Abram's wife Sarai had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar.
So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.2Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family." And Abram agreed to what Sarai said.
Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.3So Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian slave, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife for him. This happened after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan ten years.
So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes.4He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she saw that she was pregnant, her mistress became contemptible to her.
Then Sarai said to Abram, “My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. The LORD judge between you and me.”5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and when she saw that she was pregnant, I became contemptible to her. May the LORD judge between me and you."
So Abram said to Sarai, “Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her presence.6Abram replied to Sarai, "Here, your slave is in your hands; do whatever you want with her." Then Sarai mistreated her so much that she ran away from her.
Now the Angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.7The angel of the LORD found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.
And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”8He said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai."
The Angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.”9The angel of the LORD said to her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her authority."
Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.”10The angel of the LORD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count."
And the Angel of the LORD said to her: “Behold, you are with child, And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the LORD has heard your affliction.11The angel of the LORD said to her, "You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction.
He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”12This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; he will settle near all his relatives."
Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are- the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?”13So she named the LORD who spoke to her: "You are El-roi," for she said, "In this place, have I actually seen the one who sees me?"
Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; observe, it is between Kadesh and Bered.14That is why the well is called Beer-lahai-roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered.
So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.15So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram named his son (whom Hagar bore) Ishmael.
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
