New King James VersionChristian Standard Bible
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.1For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness.2He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also clothed with weakness.
Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins.3Because of this, he must make an offering for his own sins as well as for the people.
And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.4No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was.
So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.”5In the same way, Christ did not exalt himself to become a high priest, but God who said to him, You are my Son; today I have become your Father,
As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek”;6also says in another place, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,7During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.8Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered.
And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,9After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,
called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,”10and he was declared by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.11We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand.
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.12Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God's revelation again. You need milk, not solid food.
For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.13Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant.
But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.14But solid food is for the mature--for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.
