| 1On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. | 1On that day Jesus went out of the house and was sitting by the sea. |
| 2And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. | 2Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat and sat down, while the whole crowd stood on the shore. |
| 3Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. | 3Then He told them many things in parables, saying: "Consider the sower who went out to sow. |
| 4And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. | 4As he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them up. |

| 14And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: ‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; | 14Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You will listen and listen, yet never understand; and you will look and look, yet never perceive. |
| 15For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.’ | 15For this people's heart has grown callous; their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn back-- and I would cure them. |
| 16But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; | 16"But your eyes are blessed because they do see, and your ears because they do hear! |
| 17for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. | 17For I assure you: Many prophets and righteous people longed to see the things you see yet didn't see them; to hear the things you hear yet didn't hear them. |
| 18“Therefore hear the parable of the sower: | 18"You, then, listen to the parable of the sower: |
| 19When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. | 19When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and doesn't understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the one sown along the path. |
| 20But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; | 20And the one sown on rocky ground--this is one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. |
| 21yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. | 21Yet he has no root in himself, but is short-lived. When pressure or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he stumbles. |
| 22Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. | 22Now the one sown among the thorns--this is one who hears the word, but the worries of this age and the seduction of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. |

| 24Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; | 24He presented another parable to them: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. |
| 25but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. | 25But while people were sleeping, his enemy came, sowed weeds among the wheat, and left. |
| 26But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. | 26When the plants sprouted and produced grain, then the weeds also appeared. |
| 27So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ | 27The landowner's slaves came to him and said, Master, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Then where did the weeds come from?' |
| 28He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ | 28"An enemy did this!' he told them. "'So, do you want us to go and gather them up?' the slaves asked him. |
| 29But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. | 29"No,' he said. When you gather up the weeds, you might also uproot the wheat with them. |
| 30Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ” | 30Let both grow together until the harvest. | 34All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them, | 34Jesus told the crowds all these things in parables, and He would not speak anything to them without a parable, |
| 35that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.” | 35so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: I will open My mouth in parables; I will declare things kept secret from the foundation of the world. |
| 36Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.” | 36Then He dismissed the crowds and went into the house. | 53Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there. | 53When Jesus had finished these parables, He left there. |
