Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,1So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin,
that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.2in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.
For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.3For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.
In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.4So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.
They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.5They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.
For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.6Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God's standards.
But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.7For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer.
And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”8Above all keep your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.9Show hospitality to one another without complaining.
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.10Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God.
If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.11Whoever speaks, let it be with God's words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you;12Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.
but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.13But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad.
If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters.15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.
Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.16But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name.
For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?17For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God?
Now “If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?”18And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners?
Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.19So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good.
