New King James VersionNew International Version
Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies all around,1After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him,
that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”2he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent."
Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.”3Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you."
But it happened that night that the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying,4But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying:
“Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in?5"Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?
For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle.6I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.
Wherever I have moved about with all the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’ ” ’7Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"'
Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel.8"Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.
And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth.9I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.
Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously,10And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning
since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the LORD tells you that He will make you a house.11and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. "'The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you:
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.12When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.13He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.14I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.
But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.15But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”16Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.'"
According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.17Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord GOD? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?18Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord GOD; and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come. Is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?19And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant--and this decree, Sovereign LORD, is for a mere human!
Now what more can David say to You? For You, Lord GOD, know Your servant.20"What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign LORD.
For Your word’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things, to make Your servant know them.21For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.
Therefore You are great, O Lord GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.22"How great you are, Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
And who is like Your people, like Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name—and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land—before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods?23And who is like your people Israel--the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
For You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; and You, LORD, have become their God.24You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, LORD, have become their God.
“Now, O LORD God, the word which You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house, establish it forever and do as You have said.25"And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised,
So let Your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel.’ And let the house of Your servant David be established before You.26so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, 'The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!' And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight.
For You, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore Your servant has found it in his heart to pray this prayer to You.27"LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, 'I will build a house for you.' So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.
“And now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant.28Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You, O Lord GOD, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”29Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever."
