Job 17
NKJV Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New King James VersionNew International Version
“My spirit is broken, My days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me.1My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me.
Are not mockers with me? And does not my eye dwell on their provocation?2Surely mockers surround me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
“Now put down a pledge for me with Yourself. Who is he who will shake hands with me?3"Give me, O God, the pledge you demand. Who else will put up security for me?
For You have hidden their heart from understanding; Therefore You will not exalt them.4You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore you will not let them triumph.
He who speaks flattery to his friends, Even the eyes of his children will fail.5If anyone denounces their friends for reward, the eyes of their children will fail.
“But He has made me a byword of the people, And I have become one in whose face men spit.6"God has made me a byword to everyone, a man in whose face people spit.
My eye has also grown dim because of sorrow, And all my members are like shadows.7My eyes have grown dim with grief; my whole frame is but a shadow.
Upright men are astonished at this, And the innocent stirs himself up against the hypocrite.8The upright are appalled at this; the innocent are aroused against the ungodly.
Yet the righteous will hold to his way, And he who has clean hands will be stronger and stronger.9Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger.
“But please, come back again, all of you, For I shall not find one wise man among you.10"But come on, all of you, try again! I will not find a wise man among you.
My days are past, My purposes are broken off, Even the thoughts of my heart.11My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heart
They change the night into day; ‘The light is near,’ they say, in the face of darkness.12turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near.
If I wait for the grave as my house, If I make my bed in the darkness,13If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in the realm of darkness,
If I say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ And to the worm, ‘You are my mother and my sister,’14if I say to corruption, 'You are my father,' and to the worm, 'My mother' or 'My sister,'
Where then is my hope? As for my hope, who can see it?15where then is my hope-- who can see any hope for me?
Will they go down to the gates of Sheol? Shall we have rest together in the dust?”16Will it go down to the gates of death? Will we descend together into the dust?"
