New King James VersionNew Living Translation
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.1When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.
And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”2I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.”
Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying:3At this, Abram fell face down on the ground. Then God said to him,
“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.4“This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations!
No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.5What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations.
I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.6I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them!
And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.7“I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”8And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.” The Mark of the Covenant
And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.9Then God said to Abraham, “Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and all your descendants have this continual responsibility.
This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised;10This is the covenant that you and your descendants must keep: Each male among you must be circumcised.
and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.11You must cut off the flesh of your foreskin as a sign of the covenant between me and you.
He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant.12From generation to generation, every male child must be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth. This applies not only to members of your family but also to the servants born in your household and the foreign-born servants whom you have purchased.
He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.13All must be circumcised. Your bodies will bear the mark of my everlasting covenant.
And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”14Any male who fails to be circumcised will be cut off from the covenant family for breaking the covenant.” Sarai Is Named Sarah
Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.15Then God said to Abraham, “Regarding Sarai, your wife—her name will no longer be Sarai. From now on her name will be Sarah.
And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.”16And I will bless her and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings of nations will be among her descendants.”
Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?17Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. “How could I become a father at the age of 100?” he thought. “And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?”
And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”18So Abraham said to God, “May Ishmael live under your special blessing!”
Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.19But God replied, “No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant.
And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.20As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will make him extremely fruitful and multiply his descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.”21But my covenant will be confirmed with Isaac, who will be born to you and Sarah about this time next year.”
Then He finished talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.22When God had finished speaking, he left Abraham.
So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him.23On that very day Abraham took his son, Ishmael, and every male in his household, including those born there and those he had bought. Then he circumcised them, cutting off their foreskins, just as God had told him.
Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.24Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,
And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.25and Ishmael, his son, was thirteen.
That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael;26Both Abraham and his son, Ishmael, were circumcised on that same day,
and all the men of his house, born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.27along with all the other men and boys of the household, whether they were born there or bought as servants. All were circumcised with him.
