New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, “Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them!1And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.
“The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Mount Sinai.2The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
The LORD did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive today.3Not with our fathers did the LORD make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today.
At the mountain the LORD spoke to you face to face from the heart of the fire.4The LORD spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire,
I stood as an intermediary between you and the LORD, for you were afraid of the fire and did not want to approach the mountain. He spoke to me, and I passed his words on to you. This is what he said:5while I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD. For you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:
“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.6“‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You must not have any other god but me.7“‘You shall have no other gods before me.
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.8“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.9You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.10but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.11“‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
“Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.12“‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.
You have six days each week for your ordinary work,13Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys and other livestock, and any foreigners living among you. All your male and female servants must rest as you do.14but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.
Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the LORD your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day.15You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
“Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.16“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
“You must not murder.17“‘You shall not murder.
“You must not commit adultery.18“‘And you shall not commit adultery.
“You must not steal.19“‘And you shall not steal.
“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.20“‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
“You must not covet your neighbor’s wife. You must not covet your neighbor’s house or land, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.21“‘And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’
“The LORD spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.22“These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
“But when you heard the voice from the heart of the darkness, while the mountain was blazing with fire, all your tribal leaders and elders came to me.23And as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders.
They said, ‘Look, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak to us humans, and yet we live!24And you said, ‘Behold, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live.
But now, why should we risk death again? If the LORD our God speaks to us again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome fire.25Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, we shall die.
Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and yet survive?26For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived?
Go yourself and listen to what the LORD our God says. Then come and tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey.’27Go near and hear all that the LORD our God will say, and speak to us all that the LORD our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’
“The LORD heard the request you made to me. And he said, ‘I have heard what the people said to you, and they are right.28“And the LORD heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the LORD said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken.
Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever.29Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever!
Go and tell them, “Return to your tents.”30Go and say to them, “Return to your tents.”
But you stand here with me so I can give you all my commands, decrees, and regulations. You must teach them to the people so they can obey them in the land I am giving them as their possession.’”31But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.’
So Moses told the people, “You must be careful to obey all the commands of the LORD your God, following his instructions in every detail.32You shall be careful therefore to do as the LORD your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
Stay on the path that the LORD your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy.33You shall walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.
