New Living TranslationHolman Christian Standard Bible
Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm, when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love; according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion.
Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.2Wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.
For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night.3For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me.
Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.4Against You--You alone--I have sinned and done this evil in Your sight. So You are right when You pass sentence; You are blameless when You judge.
For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.5Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.
But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there.6Surely You desire integrity in the inner self, and You teach me wisdom deep within.
Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.7Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me— now let me rejoice.8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.
Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt.9Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt.
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.10God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.11Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.12Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit.
Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you.13Then I will teach the rebellious Your ways, and sinners will return to You.
Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.14Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness.
Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you.15Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.
You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering.16You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; You are not pleased with a burnt offering.
The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.17The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart.
Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.18In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit— with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar.19Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar.
