Isaiah 24
NLT Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
Look! The LORD is about to destroy the earth and make it a vast wasteland. He devastates the surface of the earth and scatters the people.1"Watch out! The LORD is about to depopulate the land and devastate it; he will turn it upside down and scatter its inhabitants.
Priests and laypeople, servants and masters, maids and mistresses, buyers and sellers, lenders and borrowers, bankers and debtors—none will be spared.2It will be the same for the lay people as for priests, the same for servants as for their masters, for female servants as for their mistresses, for buyers as for sellers, for lenders as for borrowers, and for creditors as for debtors.
The earth will be completely emptied and looted. The LORD has spoken!3The earth will be utterly depopulated and completely laid waste — for the LORD has spoken this message.
The earth mourns and dries up, and the land wastes away and withers. Even the greatest people on earth waste away.4"The earth dries up and withers; the world languishes and fades away; heaven fades away, along with the earth.
The earth suffers for the sins of its people, for they have twisted God’s instructions, violated his laws, and broken his everlasting covenant.5The earth lies defiled beneath its inhabitants; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore, a curse consumes the earth. Its people must pay the price for their sin. They are destroyed by fire, and only a few are left alive.6Therefore the curse keeps on consuming, and its inhabitants are declared guilty. Furthermore, the inhabitants of earth are ablaze, and few people are left.
The grapevines waste away, and there is no new wine. All the merrymakers sigh and mourn.7The new wine evaporates; the vine and the oil dry up; all the merrymakers groan.
The cheerful sound of tambourines is stilled; the happy cries of celebration are heard no more. The melodious chords of the harp are silent.8"The celebrations of the tambourine have ended, the noise of the jubilant has stopped, and the mirth that the harp produces has ended.
Gone are the joys of wine and song; alcoholic drink turns bitter in the mouth.9No longer do they drink wine accompanied by singing; even beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.
The city writhes in chaos; every home is locked to keep out intruders.10The chaotic city lies broken down; every house is closed up so that no one can enter them.
Mobs gather in the streets, crying out for wine. Joy has turned to gloom. Gladness has been banished from the land.11There is an outcry in the streets over wine; all cheer turns to gloom; the fun times of the earth are banished.
The city is left in ruins, its gates battered down.12Desolation remains in the city whose gates lie battered into ruins.
Throughout the earth the story is the same— only a remnant is left, like the stray olives left on the tree or the few grapes left on the vine after harvest.13So it will be on the earth and among the nations— as when an olive tree is beaten, or as gleanings when the grape harvest has ended."
But all who are left shout and sing for joy. Those in the west praise the LORD’s majesty.14"They raise their voices; they shout for joy; from the west they shout aloud over the LORD's majesty.
In eastern lands, give glory to the LORD. In the lands beyond the sea, praise the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.15Therefore, you in the east, give glory to the LORD! You in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD God of Israel!
We hear songs of praise from the ends of the earth, songs that give glory to the Righteous One! But my heart is heavy with grief. Weep for me, for I wither away. Deceit still prevails, and treachery is everywhere.16From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise: 'Glory to the Righteous One!' "But I say, 'I am pining away, I'm pining away. How terrible things are for me! For treacherous people betray— treacherous people are betraying with treachery!'"
Terror and traps and snares will be your lot, you people of the earth.17"Terror and pit and snare are coming in your direction, you inhabitants of the earth!
Those who flee in terror will fall into a trap, and those who escape the trap will be caught in a snare. Destruction falls like rain from the heavens; the foundations of the earth shake.18Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. For the windows of judgment from above are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.
The earth has broken up. It has utterly collapsed; it is violently shaken.19The earth is utterly shattered, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken.
The earth staggers like a drunk. It trembles like a tent in a storm. It falls and will not rise again, for the guilt of its rebellion is very heavy.20The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies so heavy upon it, that it falls, never to rise again.
In that day the LORD will punish the gods in the heavens and the proud rulers of the nations on earth.21"And it will come about at that time, the LORD will punish the armies of the exalted ones in the heavens, and the rulers of the earth on earth.
They will be rounded up and put in prison. They will be shut up in prison and will finally be punished.22They will be herded together into the Pit; they will be shut up in prison, and after many days they will be punished.
Then the glory of the moon will wane, and the brightness of the sun will fade, for the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will rule on Mount Zion. He will rule in great glory in Jerusalem, in the sight of all the leaders of his people.23Then the moon will be embarrassed and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem; and in the presence of its elders there will be glory."
