Proverbs 30
NLT Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh contain this message. I am weary, O God; I am weary and worn out, O God.1A discourse by the faithful collector. This is what this valiant man declared to the God with me, to the God with me, who then prevailed:
I am too stupid to be human, and I lack common sense.2Surely I am beyond the senselessness of any man; I do not perceive things the way human beings do.
I have not mastered human wisdom, nor do I know the Holy One.3I never acquired wisdom, but I know what the Holy One knows.
Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fists? Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his name—and his son’s name? Tell me if you know!4Who has ascended to heaven, and then descended? Who has collected the wind in his hands? Who has wrapped up waters in a garment? Who has established all the farthest points of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Surely you know!
Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.5Everything God says is pure; he is a shield for those who take refuge in him.
Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar.6Don't add to his words, or he will rebuke you, and you will be shown to be a liar.
O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die.7God, I have asked you for two things— don't refuse me before I die—
First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.8Keep deception and lies far away from me, and give me neither poverty nor wealth. Feed me with food that I need for today,
For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.9so that I don't become overfed and deny you by saying, "Who is the LORD?" or so that I don't become poor and steal, and then misuse the name of my God.
Never slander a worker to the employer, or the person will curse you, and you will pay for it.10Don't lie about a servant to his master, or that servant will curse you and you will pay for it.
Some people curse their father and do not thank their mother.11Some people curse their fathers and won't bless their mothers.
They are pure in their own eyes, but they are filthy and unwashed.12Some people view themselves as pure, but haven't been cleansed from their own filth.
They look proudly around, casting disdainful glances.13Some people —what an arrogant look they have!— raise their eyebrows haughtily.
They have teeth like swords and fangs like knives. They devour the poor from the earth and the needy from among humanity.14Some people have swords for teeth and knives for fangs to devour the afflicted from the earth and the needy from among mankind.
The leech has two suckers that cry out, “More, more!” There are three things that are never satisfied— no, four that never say, “Enough!”:15The leech has two daughters: "Give" and "Give". Three things will never be satisfied; four will never say "Enough"—
the grave, the barren womb, the thirsty desert, the blazing fire.16The afterlife, the barren womb, earth that still demands water, and fire—they never say, "Enough".
The eye that mocks a father and despises a mother’s instructions will be plucked out by ravens of the valley and eaten by vultures.17The eye that mocks a father and looks with a disobedient attitude at a mother— the valley ravens will pluck it out; and vultures will eat it.
There are three things that amaze me— no, four things that I don’t understand:18Three things cause wonder for me; four are beyond my understanding:
how an eagle glides through the sky, how a snake slithers on a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean, how a man loves a woman.19The way an eagle flies in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a young woman.
An adulterous woman consumes a man, then wipes her mouth and says, “What’s wrong with that?”20This is what an immoral woman is like: she eats, wipes her mouth, then says "I've done nothing wrong."
There are three things that make the earth tremble— no, four it cannot endure:21Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot remain steady:
a slave who becomes a king, an overbearing fool who prospers,22Under a slave when he becomes a king, a fool when he is overfed,
a bitter woman who finally gets a husband, a servant girl who supplants her mistress.23an unloved woman when she finds a husband, and a servant girl who inherits from her mistress.
There are four things on earth that are small but unusually wise:24Four things on earth are small, but they are very, very wise:
Ants—they aren’t strong, but they store up food all summer.25Ants aren't a strong species, yet they prepare their food in the summer.
Hyraxes —they aren’t powerful, but they make their homes among the rocks.26The rock badgers aren't a strong species either, yet they build their dens in the rocks.
Locusts—they have no king, but they march in formation.27Locusts have no king, but they all swarm in ranks.
Lizards—they are easy to catch, but they are found even in kings’ palaces.28Spiders can be caught by the hand, yet they're found in kings' palaces.
There are three things that walk with stately stride— no, four that strut about:29Three things are stately in procession, four which are stately in their gait:
the lion, king of animals, who won’t turn aside for anything,30The lion, mighty among the beasts, retreats before nothing.
the strutting rooster, the male goat, a king as he leads his army.31The strutting rooster, as well as the goat, and a king with his army.
If you have been a fool by being proud or plotting evil, cover your mouth in shame.32If you've foolishly exalted yourself or if you've plotted evil, put your hand over your mouth.
As the beating of cream yields butter and striking the nose causes bleeding, so stirring up anger causes quarrels.33Just as whipping milk produces butter, and twisting the nose causes bleeding, so also stirring up anger produces contention.
