When David was an old man, he appointed his son Solomon to be king over Israel.1So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.
David summoned all the leaders of Israel, together with the priests and Levites.2And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.
All the Levites who were thirty years old or older were counted, and the total came to 38,000.3Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand.
Then David said, “From all the Levites, 24,000 will supervise the work at the Temple of the LORD. Another 6,000 will serve as officials and judges.4Of which, twenty and four thousand were to set forward the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges:
Another 4,000 will work as gatekeepers, and 4,000 will praise the LORD with the musical instruments I have made.”5Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith.
Then David divided the Levites into divisions named after the clans descended from the three sons of Levi—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. The Gershonites6And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
The Gershonite family units were defined by their lines of descent from Libni and Shimei, the sons of Gershon.7Of the Gershonites were, Laadan, and Shimei.
Three of the descendants of Libni were Jehiel (the family leader), Zetham, and Joel.8The sons of Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three.
These were the leaders of the family of Libni. Three of the descendants of Shimei were Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran.9The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the chief of the fathers of Laadan.
Four other descendants of Shimei were Jahath, Ziza, Jeush, and Beriah.10And the sons of Shimei were, Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.
Jahath was the family leader, and Ziza was next. Jeush and Beriah were counted as a single family because neither had many sons. The Kohathites11And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to their father's house.
Four of the descendants of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.12The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.
The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. Aaron and his descendants were set apart to dedicate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices in the LORD’s presence, to serve the LORD, and to pronounce blessings in his name forever.13The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever.
As for Moses, the man of God, his sons were included with the tribe of Levi.14Now concerning Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi.
The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer.15The sons of Moses were, Gershom, and Eliezer.
The descendants of Gershom included Shebuel, the family leader.16Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel was the chief.
Eliezer had only one son, Rehabiah, the family leader. Rehabiah had numerous descendants.17And the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.
The descendants of Izhar included Shelomith, the family leader.18Of the sons of Izhar; Shelomith the chief.
The descendants of Hebron included Jeriah (the family leader), Amariah (the second), Jahaziel (the third), and Jekameam (the fourth).19Of the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.
The descendants of Uzziel included Micah (the family leader) and Isshiah (the second). The Merarites20Of the sons of Uzziel; Michah the first, and Jesiah the second.
The descendants of Merari included Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish.21The sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish.
Eleazar died with no sons, only daughters. His daughters married their cousins, the sons of Kish.22And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them.
Three of the descendants of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth.23The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.
These were the descendants of Levi by clans, the leaders of their family groups, registered carefully by name. Each had to be twenty years old or older to qualify for service in the house of the LORD.24These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward.
For David said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given us peace, and he will always live in Jerusalem.25For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:
Now the Levites will no longer need to carry the Tabernacle and its furnishings from place to place.”26And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof.
In accordance with David’s final instructions, all the Levites twenty years old or older were registered for service.27For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above:
The work of the Levites was to assist the priests, the descendants of Aaron, as they served at the house of the LORD. They also took care of the courtyards and side rooms, helped perform the ceremonies of purification, and served in many other ways in the house of God.28Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;
They were in charge of the sacred bread that was set out on the table, the choice flour for the grain offerings, the wafers made without yeast, the cakes cooked in olive oil, and the other mixed breads. They were also responsible to check all the weights and measures.29Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;
And each morning and evening they stood before the LORD to sing songs of thanks and praise to him.30And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even;
They assisted with the burnt offerings that were presented to the LORD on Sabbath days, at new moon celebrations, and at all the appointed festivals. The required number of Levites served in the LORD’s presence at all times, following all the procedures they had been given.31And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD:
And so, under the supervision of the priests, the Levites watched over the Tabernacle and the Temple and faithfully carried out their duties of service at the house of the LORD.32And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.
