Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him,1Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
“Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.”2Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God?3But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’4For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’5But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.6And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,7Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.8This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ ”9But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand.10And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”11Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?”12Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted,13But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.”14Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”15Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.
“Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked.16And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
“Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.17Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you.18But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.19For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.” The Faith of a Gentile Woman20These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon.21Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”22And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.”23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep—the people of Israel.”24But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!”25Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”26But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.
She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”27And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.
“Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed. Jesus Heals Many People28Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down.29And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.30And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:
The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel. Jesus Feeds Four Thousand31Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
Then Jesus called his disciples and told them, “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way.”32Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.
The disciples replied, “Where would we get enough food here in the wilderness for such a huge crowd?”33And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?
Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?” They replied, “Seven loaves, and a few small fish.”34And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground.35And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to the disciples, who distributed the food to the crowd.36And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
They all ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food.37And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
There were 4,000 men who were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children.38And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
Then Jesus sent the people home, and he got into a boat and crossed over to the region of Magadan.39And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.
