New Living TranslationNET Bible
Who is this who comes from Edom, from the city of Bozrah, with his clothing stained red? Who is this in royal robes, marching in his great strength? “It is I, the LORD, announcing your salvation! It is I, the LORD, who has the power to save!”1Who is this who comes from Edom, dressed in bright red, coming from Bozrah? Who is this one wearing royal attire, who marches confidently because of his great strength? "It is I, the one who announces vindication, and who is able to deliver!"
Why are your clothes so red, as if you have been treading out grapes?2Why are your clothes red? Why do you look like someone who has stomped on grapes in a vat?
“I have been treading the winepress alone; no one was there to help me. In my anger I have trampled my enemies as if they were grapes. In my fury I have trampled my foes. Their blood has stained my clothes.3"I have stomped grapes in the winepress all by myself; no one from the nations joined me. I stomped on them in my anger; I trampled them down in my rage. Their juice splashed on my garments, and stained all my clothes.
For the time has come for me to avenge my people, to ransom them from their oppressors.4For I looked forward to the day of vengeance, and then payback time arrived.
I was amazed to see that no one intervened to help the oppressed. So I myself stepped in to save them with my strong arm, and my wrath sustained me.5I looked, but there was no one to help; I was shocked because there was no one offering support. So my right arm accomplished deliverance; my raging anger drove me on.
I crushed the nations in my anger and made them stagger and fall to the ground, spilling their blood upon the earth.” Praise for Deliverance6I trampled nations in my anger, I made them drunk in my rage, I splashed their blood on the ground."
I will tell of the LORD’s unfailing love. I will praise the LORD for all he has done. I will rejoice in his great goodness to Israel, which he has granted according to his mercy and love.7I will tell of the faithful acts of the LORD, of the LORD's praiseworthy deeds. I will tell about all the LORD did for us, the many good things he did for the family of Israel, because of his compassion and great faithfulness.
He said, “They are my very own people. Surely they will not betray me again.” And he became their Savior.8He said, "Certainly they will be my people, children who are not disloyal." He became their deliverer.
In all their suffering he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.9Through all that they suffered, he suffered too. The messenger sent from his very presence delivered them. In his love and mercy he protected them; he lifted them up and carried them throughout ancient times.
But they rebelled against him and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he became their enemy and fought against them.10But they rebelled and offended his holy Spirit, so he turned into an enemy and fought against them.
Then they remembered those days of old when Moses led his people out of Egypt. They cried out, “Where is the one who brought Israel through the sea, with Moses as their shepherd? Where is the one who sent his Holy Spirit to be among his people?11His people remembered the ancient times. Where is the one who brought them up out of the sea, along with the shepherd of his flock? Where is the one who placed his holy Spirit among them,
Where is the one whose power was displayed when Moses lifted up his hand— the one who divided the sea before them, making himself famous forever?12the one who made his majestic power available to Moses, who divided the water before them, gaining for himself a lasting reputation,
Where is the one who led them through the bottom of the sea? They were like fine stallions racing through the desert, never stumbling.13who led them through the deep water? Like a horse running on flat land they did not stumble.
As with cattle going down into a peaceful valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. You led your people, LORD, and gained a magnificent reputation.” Prayer for Mercy and Pardon14Like an animal that goes down into a valley to graze, so the Spirit of the LORD granted them rest. In this way you guided your people, gaining for yourself an honored reputation.
LORD, look down from heaven; look from your holy, glorious home, and see us. Where is the passion and the might you used to show on our behalf? Where are your mercy and compassion now?15Look down from heaven and take notice, from your holy, majestic palace! Where are your zeal and power? Do not hold back your tender compassion!
Surely you are still our Father! Even if Abraham and Jacob would disown us, LORD, you would still be our Father. You are our Redeemer from ages past.16For you are our father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not recognize us. You, LORD, are our father; you have been called our protector from ancient times.
LORD, why have you allowed us to turn from your path? Why have you given us stubborn hearts so we no longer fear you? Return and help us, for we are your servants, the tribes that are your special possession.17Why, LORD, do you make us stray from your ways, and make our minds stubborn so that we do not obey you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance!
How briefly your holy people possessed your holy place, and now our enemies have destroyed it.18For a short time your special nation possessed a land, but then our adversaries knocked down your holy sanctuary.
Sometimes it seems as though we never belonged to you, as though we had never been known as your people.19We existed from ancient times, but you did not rule over them, they were not your subjects.
