Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:1Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:
“How long before you stop talking? Speak sense if you want us to answer!2"How long until you make an end of words? You must consider, and then we can talk.
Do you think we are mere animals? Do you think we are stupid?3Why should we be regarded as beasts, and considered stupid in your sight?
You may tear out your hair in anger, but will that destroy the earth? Will it make the rocks tremble?4You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, will the earth be abandoned for your sake? Or will a rock be moved from its place?
“Surely the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. The sparks of their fire will not glow.5"Yes, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished; his flame of fire does not shine.
The light in their tent will grow dark. The lamp hanging above them will be quenched.6The light in his tent grows dark; his lamp above him is extinguished.
The confident stride of the wicked will be shortened. Their own schemes will be their downfall.7His vigorous steps are restricted, and his own counsel throws him down.
The wicked walk into a net. They fall into a pit.8For he has been thrown into a net by his feet and he wanders into a mesh.
A trap grabs them by the heel. A snare holds them tight.9A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare grips him.
A noose lies hidden on the ground. A rope is stretched across their path.10A rope is hidden for him on the ground and a trap for him lies on the path.
“Terrors surround the wicked and trouble them at every step.11Terrors frighten him on all sides and dog his every step.
Hunger depletes their strength, and calamity waits for them to stumble.12Calamity is hungry for him, and misfortune is ready at his side.
Disease eats their skin; death devours their limbs.13It eats away parts of his skin; the most terrible death devours his limbs.
They are torn from the security of their homes and are brought down to the king of terrors.14He is dragged from the security of his tent, and marched off to the king of terrors.
The homes of the wicked will burn down; burning sulfur rains on their houses.15Fire resides in his tent; over his residence burning sulfur is scattered.
Their roots will dry up, and their branches will wither.16Below his roots dry up, and his branches wither above.
All memory of their existence will fade from the earth; no one will remember their names.17His memory perishes from the earth, he has no name in the land.
They will be thrust from light into darkness, driven from the world.18He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world.
They will have neither children nor grandchildren, nor any survivor in the place where they lived.19He has neither children nor descendants among his people, no survivor in those places he once stayed.
People in the west are appalled at their fate; people in the east are horrified.20People of the west are appalled at his fate; people of the east are seized with horror, saying,
They will say, ‘This was the home of a wicked person, the place of one who rejected God.’”21Surely such is the residence of an evil man; and this is the place of one who has not known God.'"
