1 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and got up to indulge in revelry.” Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” Neither be ye idolaters, as <i>were</i> some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did, and were killed by snakes. 12 So the one who thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God <i>is</i> faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear <i>it</i>. No temptation has overtaken you except <i>something</i> common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 16 Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf. Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel: Are not those who eat the sacrifices fellow partakers in the altar? Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? Look at the people of Israel; are those who eat the sacrifices not partners in the altar? Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
19 Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? What do I mean then? That food sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons. No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. But <i>I say</i>, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. <i>No,</i> but <i>I say</i> that things which <i>the Gentiles</i> sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become partners with demons. No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.
21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we? Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
23 “Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible, but not everything is edifying. “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. All things are permitted, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted, but not all things build <i>people</i> up. “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything|—but not everything is constructive.
24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. Let no man seek his own, but every man another's <i>wealth</i>. No one is to seek his own <i>advantage,</i> but rather that of his neighbor. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience. If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. If any of them that believe not bid you <i>to a feast</i>, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions, for the sake of conscience. 28 But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols, then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience— But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth <i>is</i> the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: But if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat <i>it,</i> for the sake of that one who informed <i>you</i> and for the sake of conscience; But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.
29 the other one’s conscience, I mean, not your own. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience? I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience? Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another <i>man's</i> conscience? Now <i>by</i> “conscience” I do not mean your own, but the other person’s; for why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience? I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience?
30 If I partake in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered about that for which I give thanks? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks or the church of God— Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Do not offend Jews or Greeks, or the church of God; Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—
33 as I also try to please everyone in all I do. For I am not seeking my own good, but the good of many, that they may be saved. just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. Even as I please all <i>men</i> in all <i>things</i>, not seeking mine own profit, but the <i>profit</i> of many, that they may be saved. just as I also please everyone in all things, not seeking my own benefit but the <i>benefit</i> of the many, so that they may be saved. even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
