1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel. When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. Now it came about, when Samuel was old, that he appointed his sons as judges over Israel. When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders.
2 The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second was Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba. 3 But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside toward dishonest gain, accepting bribes and perverting justice. Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted justice. And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. 4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 6 But when they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” their demand was displeasing in the sight of Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD. But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the LORD. But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. But the matter was displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the LORD. But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
7 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected Me as their king. And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. And the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people regarding all that they say to you, because they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being King over them. And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.
8 Just as they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. Like all the deeds which they have done since the day that I brought them up from Egypt even to this day—in that they have abandoned Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you as well. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
9 Now listen to them, but you must solemnly warn them and show them the manner of the king who will reign over them.” Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.” Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. Now then, listen to their voice; however, you shall warn them strongly and tell them of the practice of the king who will reign over them.” Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 So Samuel spoke all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king. So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking for a king from him. 11 He said, “This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them to his own chariots and horses, to run in front of his chariots. And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint <i>them</i> for himself, for his chariots, and <i>to be</i> his horsemen; and <i>some</i> shall run before his chariots. And he said, “This will be the practice of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and put <i>them</i> in his chariots for himself and among his horsemen, and they will run before his chariots. He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.
12 He will appoint some for himself as commanders of thousands and of fifties, and others to plow his ground, to reap his harvest, to make his weapons of war, and to equip his chariots. And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. 18 When that day comes, you will beg for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.” And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.” And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day. Then you will cry out on that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.” When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.”
19 Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We must have a king over us. But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; Yet the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, “No, but there shall be a king over us, But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us.
20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to judge us, to go out before us, and to fight our battles.” that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. so that we also may be like all the nations, and our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 Samuel listened to all the words of the people and repeated them in the hearing of the LORD. And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the LORD. And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD. Now after Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the LORD’S hearing. When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD.
22 “Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “Everyone must go back to his city.” And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey their voice and make them a king.” Samuel then said to the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.” And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city. And the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice and appoint a king for them.” So Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Go, every man to his city.” The LORD answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.” Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”
