כִּֽי־
תֵ֭שֵׁב
לִלְח֣וֹם
אֶת־
מוֹשֵׁ֑ל
בִּ֥ין
תָּ֝בִ֗ין
אֶת־
אֲשֶׁ֥ר
לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃
When
you sit down
to dine
with
a ruler,
consider
carefully
what
is set before you,
When thou sittest
to eat
with a ruler,
consider
diligently
what [is] before
thee:

וְשַׂמְתָּ֣
שַׂכִּ֣ין
בְּלֹעֶ֑ךָ
אִם־
בַּ֖עַל
נֶ֣פֶשׁ
אָֽתָּה׃
and put
a knife
to your throat
if
you
possess
a great appetite.
And put
a knife
to thy throat,
if thou [be] a man given
to appetite.
3
אַל־
תִּ֭תְאָו
לְמַטְעַמּוֹתָ֑יו
וְ֝ה֗וּא
לֶ֣חֶם
כְּזָבִֽים׃
Do not
crave
his delicacies,
for that
food
is deceptive.
Be not desirous
of his dainties:
for they [are] deceitful
meat.
4
אַל־
תִּיגַ֥ע
לְֽהַעֲשִׁ֑יר
מִֽבִּינָתְךָ֥
חֲדָֽל׃
Do not
wear yourself out
to get rich;
be wise enough
to restrain yourself.
Labour
not to be rich:
cease
from thine own wisdom.

(יָע֥וּף)
הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃
פ
When you glance
at wealth,
it disappears,
for
it makes
wings for itself
and flies
like an eagle
to the sky.
Wilt thou set
thine eyes
upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly
make
themselves wings;
they fly away
as an eagle
toward heaven.
6
אַל־

אֶת־
לֶ֭חֶם
רַ֣ע
עָ֑יִן
וְאַל־
[תתאו]
(תִּ֝תְאָ֗יו)
לְמַטְעַמֹּתָֽיו׃
Do not
eat
the bread
of a stingy man,
and do not
crave
his delicacies;
Eat
thou not the bread
of [him that hath] an evil
eye,
neither desire
thou his dainty meats:

בַּל־
עִמָּֽךְ׃
for
he is keeping track,
inwardly
counting the cost.
“Eat
and drink,”
he says
to you,
but his heart
is not
with you.
For as he thinketh
in his heart,
so [is] he: Eat
and drink,
saith
he to thee; but his heart
[is] not with thee.
8
פִּֽתְּךָ־
אָכַ֥לְתָּ
תְקִיאֶ֑נָּה
וְ֝שִׁחַ֗תָּ
דְּבָרֶ֥יךָ
הַנְּעִימִֽים׃
You will vomit up
what little
you have eaten
and waste
your pleasant
words.
The morsel
[which] thou hast eaten
shalt thou vomit up,
and lose
thy sweet
words.
9

אַל־

כִּֽי־

לְשֵׂ֣כֶל
מִלֶּֽיךָ׃
Do not
speak
to a fool,
for
he will despise
the wisdom
of your words.
Speak
not in the ears
of a fool:
for he will despise
the wisdom
of thy words.
10
אַל־
תַּ֭סֵּג
גְּב֣וּל

יְ֝תוֹמִ֗ים
אַל־

Do not
move
an ancient
boundary stone
or
encroach
on the fields
of the fatherless,
Remove
not the old
landmark;
and enter
not into the fields
of the fatherless:
11
כִּֽי־
גֹאֲלָ֥ם

אִתָּֽךְ׃
for
their Redeemer
is strong;
He
will take up
their case
against you.
For their redeemer
[is] mighty;
he shall plead
their cause
with thee.
12
הָבִ֣יאָה
לַמּוּסָ֣ר
לִבֶּ֑ךָ
וְ֝אָזְנֶ֗ךָ
לְאִמְרֵי־
דָֽעַת׃
Apply
your heart
to instruction
and your ears
to words
of knowledge.
Apply
thine heart
unto instruction,
and thine ears
to the words
of knowledge.
13
אַל־

מוּסָ֑ר
כִּֽי־

Do not
withhold
discipline
from a child;
although
you strike him
with a rod,
he will not
die.
Withhold
not correction
from the child:
for [if] thou beatest
him with the rod,
he shall not die.
14
אַ֭תָּה
בַּשֵּׁ֣בֶט
תַּכֶּ֑נּוּ
וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ
מִשְּׁא֥וֹל

Strike him
with a rod,
and you will deliver
his soul
from Sheol.
Thou shalt beat
him with the rod,
and shalt deliver
his soul
from hell.

My son,
if
your heart

my own heart
will indeed
rejoice.
My son,
if thine heart
be wise,
my heart
shall rejoice,
even mine.
16
וְתַעְלֹ֥זְנָה
כִלְיוֹתָ֑י
בְּדַבֵּ֥ר
שְׂ֝פָתֶ֗יךָ
מֵישָׁרִֽים׃
My inmost being
will rejoice
when your lips
speak
what is right.
Yea, my reins
shall rejoice,
when thy lips
speak
right things.
17
אַל־

Do not
let your heart

sinners,
but
always continue
in the fear
of the LORD.
Let not thine heart
envy
sinners:
but [be thou] in the fear
of the LORD
all the day

For
surely
there is
a future,
and your hope
will not

For surely there is
an end;
and thine expectation
shall not be cut off.
19
שְׁמַע־

Listen,
my son,
and be wise,
and guide
your heart
on the right course.
Hear
thou, my son,
and be wise,
and guide
thine heart
in the way.
20
אַל־

Do not

wine

themselves on meat.
Be not among winebibbers;
among riotous eaters

וּ֝קְרָעִ֗ים
תַּלְבִּ֥ישׁ
נוּמָֽה׃
For
the drunkard
and the glutton
will come to poverty,
and drowsiness
will clothe them
in rags.
For the drunkard
and the glutton
shall come to poverty:
and drowsiness
shall clothe
[a man] with rags.

Listen

who
gave you life,
and do not

your mother
when
she is old.
Hearken
unto thy father
that begat
thee, and despise
not thy mother
when she is old.

Buy
the truth,
and sell
[it] not; [also] wisdom,
and instruction,
and understanding.

The father
of a righteous man
will greatly rejoice,
and he who fathers
a wise son
will delight in him.
The father
of the righteous
shall greatly
rejoice:
and he that begetteth
a wise
[child] shall have joy
of him.
25
יִֽשְׂמַח־
אָבִ֥יךָ

וְ֝תָגֵ֗ל
יֽוֹלַדְתֶּֽךָ׃
May your father

and may she who gave you birth
rejoice!
Thy father
and thy mother
shall be glad,
and she that bare
thee shall rejoice.

My son,

and let thine eyes
observe
my ways.

a prostitute
is a deep

and an adulteress
is a narrow

For a whore
[is] a deep
ditch;
and a strange woman
[is] a narrow
pit.

She also lieth in wait

Who hath woe?
who hath sorrow?
who hath contentions?

who hath wounds

they have beaten

I will seek
it yet
again.
