1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Every person is to be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
2 Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Then do what is right, and you will have his approval. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.
4 For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not carry the sword in vain. He is God’s servant, an agent of retribution to the wrongdoer. for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to <i>execute</i> wrath upon him that doeth evil. for it is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a servant of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
5 Therefore it is necessary to submit to authority, not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. Wherefore <i>ye</i> must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for the sake of conscience. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes. For the authorities are God’s servants, who devote themselves to their work. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. For because of this you also pay taxes, for <i>rulers</i> are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.
7 Pay everyone what you owe him: taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute <i>is due</i>; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Pay to all what is due them: tax to whom tax <i>is due;</i> custom to whom custom; respect to whom respect; honor to whom honor. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
8 Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love. For he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled <i>the</i> Law. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.
9 The commandments “Do not commit adultery, “Do not murder, “Do not steal, “Do not covet,” and any other commandments, are summed up in this one decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if <i>there be</i> any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. For this, “YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
10 Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love <i>is</i> the fulfilling of the law. Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of <i>the</i> Law. Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
11 And do this, understanding the occasion. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. And that, knowing the time, that now <i>it is</i> high time to awake out of sleep: for now <i>is</i> our salvation nearer than when we believed. <i>Do</i> this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we <i>first</i> believed. And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
12 The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near. So let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let’s rid ourselves of the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. Let’s behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and debauchery, not in strife and jealousy. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.
14 Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to <i>fulfil</i> the lusts <i>thereof</i>. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to <i>its</i> lusts. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
