Now leave Me alone,

God summoned Moses to stand in the breach for Israel rather than withdraw from them. The command tested whether Moses would accept personal advancement or plead for the covenant people. Like Abraham interceding for Sodom, Moses was granted access to God’s purposes and called to seek mercy on behalf of those under judgment.

Israel’s worship of the golden calf violated the covenant almost immediately after they had pledged obedience at Sinai. God’s holy anger rose against their deliberate rejection of Him for an idol fashioned by human hands. Idolatry was not a minor failure but covenant treachery against the God who had redeemed them from Egypt.

and consume them.

The threatened destruction revealed the righteous consequence of Israel’s rebellion. The same holiness that later consumed Nadab and Abihu for unauthorized worship stood against the nation’s corrupt worship. Yet judgment also opened the way for Moses’ intercession, through which God displayed both His justice and His mercy.

Then I will make you into a great nation.”

God offered Moses the position once occupied by Abraham as the father of a great nation. Moses refused to seek his own legacy at Israel’s expense and instead appealed to God’s promises, reputation, and mercy. God preserved Israel, and His covenant purpose continued until its fulfillment in Christ, who gathers a holy people from every nation.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Moses
The leader of the Israelites, chosen by God to lead His people out of Egypt. At this point in Exodus, Moses is on Mount Sinai receiving the Law from God.

2. God (Yahweh)
The one true God who delivered the Israelites from Egypt. In this passage, He expresses His anger towards the Israelites for their idolatry.

3. The Israelites
The people chosen by God, who have just been delivered from slavery in Egypt. They have quickly turned to idolatry by creating and worshiping a golden calf.

4. Mount Sinai
The mountain where Moses meets with God and receives the Ten Commandments. It is a place of divine revelation and covenant.

Teaching Points
God's Righteous Anger
