Job Laments the Finality of Death
1 אָ֭דָם (Man) יְל֣וּד (who is born) אִשָּׁ֑ה (of a woman)
קְצַ֥ר (short) יָ֝מִ֗ים (of days), וּֽשְׂבַֽע־ (and full) רֹֽגֶז׃ (of trouble).
2 כְּצִ֣יץ (Like a flower) יָ֭צָא (he comes forth) וַיִּמָּ֑ל (and withers),
וַיִּבְרַ֥ח (and he flees) כַּ֝צֵּ֗ל (like a shadow), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יַעֲמֽוֹד׃ (does stand).
3 אַף־ (And) עַל־ (upon) זֶ֭ה (this one) פָּקַ֣חְתָּ (do You open) עֵינֶ֑ךָ (Your eyes)
וְאֹ֘תִ֤י (and me) תָבִ֖יא (bring) בְמִשְׁפָּ֣ט (into judgment) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with You).
4 מִֽי־ (Who) יִתֵּ֣ן (will bring) טָ֭הוֹר (clean) מִטָּמֵ֗א (from unclean)?
לֹ֣א (Not) אֶחָֽד׃ (one)!
5 אִ֥ם (Since) חֲרוּצִ֨ים׀ (are determined) יָמָ֗יו (his days),
מִֽסְפַּר־ (the number) חֳדָשָׁ֥יו (of his months) אִתָּ֑ךְ (is with You),
חֻקּוֹ (his limits) עָ֝שִׂ֗יתָ (You have made)
וְלֹ֣א (and not) יַעֲבֽוֹר׃ (can he pass over them).
6 שְׁעֵ֣ה (Look away) מֵעָלָ֣יו (from him) וְיֶחְדָּ֑ל (that he may rest),
עַד־ (until) יִ֝רְצֶ֗ה (he can enjoy) כְּשָׂכִ֥יר (like a hireling) יוֹמֽוֹ׃ (his day).
7 כִּ֤י (For) יֵ֥שׁ (there is) לָעֵ֗ץ (for a tree) תִּ֫קְוָ֥ה (hope)
אִֽם־ (if) יִ֭כָּרֵת (it is cut down), וְע֣וֹד (that again) יַחֲלִ֑יף (it will pass through),
וְ֝יֹֽנַקְתּ֗וֹ (and its tender shoots) לֹ֣א (not) תֶחְדָּֽל׃ (will cease).
8 אִם־ (Though) יַזְקִ֣ין (may grow old) בָּאָ֣רֶץ (in the earth) שָׁרְשׁ֑וֹ (its root),
וּ֝בֶעָפָ֗ר (and in the dirt) יָמ֥וּת (may die) גִּזְעֽוֹ׃ (its stump),
9 מֵרֵ֣יחַ (from the scent) מַ֣יִם (of water) יַפְרִ֑חַ (it will sprout),
וְעָשָׂ֖ה (and will make) קָצִ֣יר (branches) כְּמוֹ־ (like) נָֽטַע׃ (a fresh planting).
10 וְגֶ֣בֶר (And a man) יָ֭מוּת (dies) וַֽיֶּחֱלָ֑שׁ (and is laid low).
וַיִּגְוַ֖ע (And expires) אָדָ֣ם (a man), וְאַיּֽוֹ׃ (and where is he)?
11 אָֽזְלוּ־ (As disappears) מַ֭יִם (waters) מִנִּי־ (from) יָ֑ם (the sea),
וְ֝נָהָ֗ר (and a river) יֶחֱרַ֥ב (dries up) וְיָבֵֽשׁ׃ (and withers),
12 וְאִ֥ישׁ (and a man) שָׁכַ֗ב (lies down)
וְֽלֹא־ (and not) יָ֫ק֥וּם (does arise).
עַד־ (Until) בִּלְתִּ֣י (are no more) שָׁ֭מַיִם (the heavens),
לֹ֣א (not) יָקִ֑יצוּ (they will awaken) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יֵ֝עֹ֗רוּ (they will be roused) מִשְּׁנָתָֽם׃ (from their sleep).
13 מִ֤י (Who) יִתֵּ֨ן׀ (will give that) בִּשְׁא֬וֹל (in Sheol) תַּצְפִּנֵ֗נִי (You would hide me),
תַּ֭סְתִּירֵנִי (that You would hide me) עַד־ (until) שׁ֣וּב (the turning back of) אַפֶּ֑ךָ (Your anger),
תָּ֤שִׁ֥ית (that You would set) לִ֖י (for me) חֹ֣ק (a limit)
וְתִזְכְּרֵֽנִי׃ (and then remember me)!
14 אִם־ (If) יָמ֥וּת (dies) גֶּ֗בֶר (a man), הֲיִ֫חְיֶ֥ה (will he live)?
כָּל־ (All) יְמֵ֣י (the days) צְבָאִ֣י (of my hardship) אֲיַחֵ֑ל (I will wait),
עַד־ (until) בּ֝֗וֹא (the coming) חֲלִיפָתִֽי׃ (of my change).
15 תִּ֭קְרָא (You will call), וְאָנֹכִ֣י (and I) אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ךָּ (will answer You);
לְֽמַעֲשֵׂ֖ה (the work) יָדֶ֣יךָ (of Your hands) תִכְסֹֽף׃ (You will desire).
16 כִּֽי־ (For) עַ֭תָּה (now) צְעָדַ֣י (my steps) תִּסְפּ֑וֹר (You count),
לֹֽא־ (not) תִ֝שְׁמ֗וֹר (do you keep watch) עַל־ (over) חַטָּאתִֽי׃ (my sin)?
17 חָתֻ֣ם (Sealed up) בִּצְר֣וֹר (in a bundle) פִּשְׁעִ֑י (is my transgression),
וַ֝תִּטְפֹּ֗ל (and You plaster) עַל־ (over) עֲוֺנִֽי׃ (my iniquity).
18 וְ֭אוּלָם (But as) הַר־ (a mountain) נוֹפֵ֣ל (falling) יִבּ֑וֹל (wastes away)
וְ֝צ֗וּר (and as a rock) יֶעְתַּ֥ק (moves) מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃ (from its place),
19 אֲבָנִ֤ים׀ (as stones) שָׁ֥חֲקוּ (are worn away) מַ֗יִם (by the waters)
תִּשְׁטֹֽף־ (and engulf) סְפִיחֶ֥יהָ (her torrents) עֲפַר־ (the dust) אָ֑רֶץ (of the earth),
וְתִקְוַ֖ת (and the hope) אֱנ֣וֹשׁ (of man) הֶאֱבַֽדְתָּ׃ (You destroy).
20 תִּתְקְפֵ֣הוּ (You prevail over him) לָ֭נֶצַח (forever) וַֽיַּהֲלֹ֑ךְ (and he goes away);
מְשַׁנֶּ֥ה (You change) פָ֝נָ֗יו (his face) וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּ׃ (and send him away).
21 יִכְבְּד֣וּ (Gain honor) בָ֭נָיו (his sons) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יֵדָ֑ע (he does know it),
וְ֝יִצְעֲר֗וּ (and they are diminished) וְֽלֹא־ (and not) יָבִ֥ין (he does perceive) לָֽמוֹ׃ (it),
22 אַךְ־ (indeed) בְּ֭שָׂרוֹ (his flesh) עָלָ֣יו (upon him) יִכְאָ֑ב (is in pain),
וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ (and his soul) עָלָ֥יו (over him) תֶּאֱבָֽל׃פ (mourns).
