Eliphaz: Job Does Not Fear God

1 וַ֭יַּעַן (And answered) אֱלִיפַ֥ז (Eliphaz) הַֽתֵּימָנִ֗י (the Temanite) וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ (and said):

2 הֶֽחָכָ֗ם (Does a wise one) יַעֲנֶ֥ה (answer) דַֽעַת־ (with knowledge) ר֑וּחַ (of wind)

וִֽימַלֵּ֖א (and fill) קָדִ֣ים (with the east wind) בִּטְנֽוֹ׃ (his belly)?

3 הוֹכֵ֣חַ (Should he reason) בְּ֭דָבָר (with a word) לֹ֣א (not) יִסְכּ֑וֹן (that does benefit)

וּ֝מִלִּ֗ים (and with words) לֹא־ (without) יוֹעִ֥יל (profit) בָּֽם׃ (in them)?

4 אַף־ (Indeed), אַ֭תָּה (you) תָּפֵ֣ר (break apart) יִרְאָ֑ה (fear)

וְתִגְרַ֥ע (and diminish) שִׂ֝יחָ֗ה (meditation) לִפְנֵי־ (before the face of) אֵֽל׃ (God).

5 כִּ֤י (For) יְאַלֵּ֣ף (teaches) עֲוֺנְךָ֣ (your iniquity) פִ֑יךָ (your mouth),

וְ֝תִבְחַ֗ר (and you choose) לְשׁ֣וֹן (the tongue) עֲרוּמִֽים׃ (of the crafty).

6 יַרְשִֽׁיעֲךָ֣ (Declares you wicked) פִ֣יךָ (your own mouth) וְלֹא־ (and not) אָ֑נִי (I);

וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ (and your lips) יַעֲנוּ־ (testify) בָֽךְ׃ (against you).

7 הֲרִאישׁ֣וֹן (As the first) אָ֭דָם (man) תִּוָּלֵ֑ד (were you born)?

וְלִפְנֵ֖י (And before the face of) גְבָע֣וֹת (the hills) חוֹלָֽלְתָּ׃ (were you formed)?

8 הַבְס֣וֹד (The council) אֱל֣וֹהַ (of God) תִּשְׁמָ֑ע (do you hear),

וְתִגְרַ֖ע (and reduce) אֵלֶ֣יךָ (to yourself alone) חָכְמָֽה׃ (wisdom)?

9 מַה־ (What) יָּ֭דַעְתָּ (do you know) וְלֹ֣א (that not) נֵדָ֑ע (we do know)?

תָּ֝בִ֗ין (What do you understand) וְֽלֹא־ (that not) עִמָּ֥נוּ (with us) הֽוּא׃ (it is).

10 גַּם־ (Even) שָׂ֣ב (the gray-haired) גַּם־ (and) יָשִׁ֣ישׁ (the aged) בָּ֑נוּ (are with us)—

כַּבִּ֖יר (greater) מֵאָבִ֣יךָ (than your father) יָמִֽים׃ (in days).

11 הַמְעַ֣ט (Are they too small) מִ֭מְּךָ (for you) תַּנְחֻמ֣וֹת (the consolations) אֵ֑ל (of God),

וְ֝דָבָ֗ר (or a word) לָאַ֥ט (in gentleness) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (to you).

12 מַה־ (Why) יִּקָּחֲךָ֥ (does carry you away) לִבֶּ֑ךָ (your heart),

וּֽמַה־ (and why) יִּרְזְמ֥וּן (do flash) עֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (your eyes),

13 כִּֽי־ (that) תָשִׁ֣יב (you should turn) אֶל־ (against) אֵ֣ל (God) רוּחֶ֑ךָ (your spirit),

וְהֹצֵ֖אתָ (and bring out) מִפִּ֣יךָ (from your mouth) מִלִּֽין׃ (such words)?

14 מָֽה־ (What is) אֱנ֥וֹשׁ (man) כִּֽי־ (that) יִזְכֶּ֑ה (he should be pure),

וְכִֽי־ (or that) יִ֝צְדַּ֗ק (he should be righteous) יְל֣וּד (one who is born) אִשָּֽׁה׃ (of a woman)?

15 הֵ֣ן (Behold) בִּקְדֹשׁוֹ (in His holy ones) לֹ֣א (not) יַאֲמִ֑ין (does He trust)

וְ֝שָׁמַ֗יִם (and the heavens) לֹא־ (not) זַכּ֥וּ (are pure) בְעֵינָֽיו׃ (in His eyes),

16 אַ֭ף (also) כִּֽי־ (surely) נִתְעָ֥ב (the abominable) וְֽנֶאֱלָ֑ח (and corrupt one)

אִישׁ־ (is a man), שֹׁתֶ֖ה (drinking) כַמַּ֣יִם (as water) עַוְלָֽה׃ (iniquity)?

17 אֲחַוְךָ֥ (I will tell you)— שְֽׁמַֽע־ (listen) לִ֑י (to me),

וְזֶֽה־ (and this that) חָ֝זִ֗יתִי (I have seen) וַאֲסַפֵּֽרָה׃ (I will recount),

18 אֲשֶׁר־ (what) חֲכָמִ֥ים (the wise) יַגִּ֑ידוּ (have brought forward)

וְלֹ֥א (and not) כִֽ֝חֲד֗וּ (have concealed) מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם׃ (from their fathers),

19 לָהֶ֣ם (to whom) לְ֭בַדָּם (alone) נִתְּנָ֣ה (was given) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land),

וְלֹא־ (and not) עָ֖בַר (passed over) זָ֣ר (a stranger) בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ (in their midst).

20 כָּל־ (All) יְמֵ֣י (the days) רָ֭שָׁע (of the wicked) ה֣וּא (he) מִתְחוֹלֵ֑ל (is writhing),

וּמִסְפַּ֥ר (and the number) שָׁ֝נִ֗ים (of years) נִצְפְּנ֥וּ (is hidden) לֶעָרִֽיץ׃ (for the ruthless).

21 קוֹל־ (The voice) פְּחָדִ֥ים (of dread) בְּאָזְנָ֑יו (is in his ears);

בַּ֝שָּׁל֗וֹם (in prosperity) שׁוֹדֵ֥ד (the destroyer) יְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃ (comes upon him).

22 לֹא־ (Not) יַאֲמִ֣ין (is he sure) שׁ֭וּב (to return) מִנִּי־ (from) חֹ֑שֶׁךְ (darkness),

וְצָפוּ (and watched over) ה֣וּא (is he) אֱלֵי־ (unto) חָֽרֶב׃ (the sword).

23 נֹ֘דֵ֤ד (Is wandering) ה֣וּא (he is) לַלֶּ֣חֶם (for bread) אַיֵּ֑ה (for vultures),

יָדַ֓ע׀ (knowing) כִּֽי־ (that) נָכ֖וֹן (ready) בְּיָד֣וֹ (at his hand) יֽוֹם־ (is a day) חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ (of darkness).

24 יְֽ֭בַעֲתֻהוּ (They terrify him) צַ֣ר (distress) וּמְצוּקָ֑ה (and anguish);

תִּ֝תְקְפֵ֗הוּ (they prevail against him) כְּמֶ֤לֶךְ׀ (like a king) עָתִ֬יד (ready) לַכִּידֽוֹר׃ (for the attack).

25 כִּֽי־ (For) נָטָ֣ה (he stretched out) אֶל־ (against) אֵ֣ל (God) יָד֑וֹ (his hand),

וְאֶל־ (and against) שַׁ֝דַּ֗י (Shaddai) יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃ (he sought to prevail),

26 יָר֣וּץ (running) אֵלָ֣יו (against Him) בְּצַוָּ֑אר (with the neck),

בַּ֝עֲבִ֗י (with thickness) גַּבֵּ֥י (of the bosses) מָֽגִנָּֽיו׃ (of his shields).

27 כִּֽי־ (For) כִסָּ֣ה (he has covered) פָנָ֣יו (his face) בְּחֶלְבּ֑וֹ (with his fat)

וַיַּ֖עַשׂ (and made) פִּימָ֣ה (thick fat) עֲלֵי־ (upon) כָֽסֶל׃ (his loin).

28 וַיִּשְׁכּ֤וֹן׀ (And He dwells in) עָ֘רִ֤ים (cities) נִכְחָד֗וֹת (desolate), בָּ֭תִּים (in houses) לֹא־ (not) יֵ֣שְׁבוּ (do people dwell), לָ֑מוֹ (in them)

אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which) הִתְעַתְּד֣וּ (are ready to be) לְגַלִּֽים׃ (heaps).

29 לֹֽא־ (Not) יֶ֭עְשַׁר (he will be rich), וְלֹא־ (and not) יָק֣וּם (will stand) חֵיל֑וֹ (his wealth),

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִטֶּ֖ה (will stretch) לָאָ֣רֶץ (to the earth) מִנְלָֽם׃ (his possessions).

30 לֹֽא־ (Not) יָס֨וּר׀ (will he turn aside) מִנִּי־ (from) חֹ֗שֶׁךְ (darkness);

יֹֽ֭נַקְתּוֹ (his shoot) תְּיַבֵּ֣שׁ (will dry out) שַׁלְהָ֑בֶת (the flame),

וְ֝יָס֗וּר (and he will turn aside) בְּר֣וּחַ (at the breath) פִּֽיו׃ (of his mouth).

31 אַל־ (Do not) יַאֲמֵ֣ן (let him trust) בַּשּׁוֹ (in emptiness), נִתְעָ֑ה (deceiving himself),

כִּי־ (for) שָׁ֝֗וְא (emptiness) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (will be) תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃ (his recompense).

32 בְּֽלֹא־ (Not in) י֭וֹמוֹ (his day) תִּמָּלֵ֑א (will it be fulfilled),

וְ֝כִפָּת֗וֹ (and his branch) לֹ֣א (not) רַעֲנָֽנָה׃ (will be green).

33 יַחְמֹ֣ס (He will shake off) כַּגֶּ֣פֶן (like a vine) בִּסְר֑וֹ (his unripe grape)

וְיַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ (and he will cast off) כַּ֝זַּ֗יִת (like an olive tree) נִצָּתֽוֹ׃ (his blossom).

34 כִּֽי־ (For) עֲדַ֣ת (the company) חָנֵ֣ף (of the godless) גַּלְמ֑וּד (is barren),

וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ (and fire) אָכְלָ֥ה (will consume) אָֽהֳלֵי־ (the tents) שֹֽׁחַד׃ (of bribery).

35 הָרֹ֣ה (They conceive) עָ֭מָל (trouble) וְיָ֣לֹד (and give birth to) אָ֑וֶן (inquity),

וּ֝בִטְנָ֗ם (and their belly) תָּכִ֥ין (prepares) מִרְמָֽה׃ס (deceit).
