Good News Translation
This time, when the donkey saw the angel, it lay down. Balaam lost his temper and began to beat the donkey with his stick.

When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, it lay down under Balaam; and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff.

So it just lay down. Balaam lost his temper, then picked up a stick and whacked the donkey.
