And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.

It is just as Isaiah predicted: "Unless the Lord of Hosts had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom, we would have resembled Gomorrah."
And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because there is no one left to buy their cargo--
Then they will throw dust on their heads as they weep and mourn and cry out: "Woe, woe to the great city, where all who had ships on the sea were enriched by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been destroyed."
Then the LORD rained down brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah--from the LORD out of the heavens.
Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.
All its soil will be a burning waste of brimstone and salt, unsown and unproductive, with no plant growing on it, just like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His fierce anger.
This is an oracle concerning Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz received:
Look, here come the riders, horsemen in pairs." And one answered, saying, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon! All the images of her gods lie shattered on the ground."
Sit in silence and go into darkness, O Daughter of Chaldea. For you will no longer be called the queen of kingdoms.
Come together, all of you, and listen: Which of the idols has foretold these things? The LORD's chosen ally will carry out His desire against Babylon, and His arm will be against the Chaldeans.
But when seventy years are complete, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their guilt, declares the LORD, and I will make it an everlasting desolation.

and say, 'O LORD, You have promised to cut off this place so that no one will remain--neither man nor beast. Indeed, it will be desolate forever.'
the king exclaimed, "Is this not Babylon the Great, which I myself have built by the might of my power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?"
"Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand snatched from a blaze, yet you did not return to Me," declares the LORD.
