Berean Study BibleEnglish Standard Version
Some time later, the king’s cupbearer and baker offended their master, the king of Egypt.1Some time after this, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker committed an offense against their lord the king of Egypt.
Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,2And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,
and imprisoned them in the house of the captain of the guard, the same prison where Joseph was confined.3and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined.
The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he became their personal attendant. After they had been in custody for some time,4The captain of the guard appointed Joseph to be with them, and he attended them. They continued for some time in custody.
both of these men—the Egyptian king’s cupbearer and baker, who were being held in the prison—had a dream on the same night, and each dream had its own meaning.5And one night they both dreamed—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—each his own dream, and each dream with its own interpretation.
When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were distraught.6When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled.
So he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so downcast today?”7So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, “Why are your faces downcast today?”
“We both had dreams,” they replied, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”8They said to him, “We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” And Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.”
So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream: “In my dream there was a vine before me,9So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and said to him, “In my dream there was a vine before me,
and on the vine were three branches. As it budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters ripened into grapes.10and on the vine there were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the clusters ripened into grapes.
Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into his cup, and placed the cup in his hand.”11Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”
Joseph replied, “This is the interpretation: The three branches are three days.12Then Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days.
Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore your position. You will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you did when you were his cupbearer.13In three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office, and you shall place Pharaoh’s cup in his hand as formerly, when you were his cupbearer.
But when it goes well for you, please remember me and show me kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh, that he might bring me out of this prison.14Only remember me, when it is well with you, and please do me the kindness to mention me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this house.
For I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing for which they should have put me in this dungeon.”15For I was indeed stolen out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the pit.”
When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: There were three baskets of white bread on my head.16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, “I also had a dream: there were three cake baskets on my head,
In the top basket were all sorts of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”17and in the uppermost basket there were all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it out of the basket on my head.”
Joseph replied, “This is the interpretation: The three baskets are three days.18And Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days.
Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and hang you on a tree. Then the birds will eat the flesh of your body.”19In three days Pharaoh will lift up your head—from you!—and hang you on a tree. And the birds will eat the flesh from you.”
On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he held a feast for all his officials, and in their presence he lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.20On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he made a feast for all his servants and lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.
Pharaoh restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.21He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.
But Pharaoh hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had described to them in his interpretation.22But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.
The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot all about him.23Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
