Berean Study BibleInternational Standard Version
From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the sea creature.
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.2He said: "I called out to the LORD from the midst of affliction directed at me, and he answered me. From the depths of death I cried out for help; and you heard my cry.
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.3You cast me into the deep— into the heart of the sea. Flood waters engulfed me. All your breakers and your waves swirled over me.
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’4So I told myself, 'I have been driven away from you. How will I again gaze on your holy Temple?'
The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head.5Flood waters encompassed me, the deep surrounded me while seaweed wrapped around my head.
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!6I sank to the roots of the mountains; the earth's prison bars closed around me forever. Yet you resurrect the dead from the Pit, LORD my God!
As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.7"As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to you in your holy Temple.
Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion.8Those who cling to vain idols leave behind the gracious love that could have been theirs.
But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”9But as for me, with a voice of thanksgiving I will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance is the LORD's!"
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.10Then the LORD spoke to the sea creature, and it spewed Jonah onto the dry land.
