From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,1Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.2and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer.
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.3You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me.
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’4I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple!
The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head.5Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!6I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God.
As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.7When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple.
Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion.8Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs.
But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”9But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!"
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.10Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land.
