When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.1Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.2Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting.
They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.3And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.
And when this sound rang out, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking his own language.6When this sound occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
Astounded and amazed, they asked, “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?7Completely baffled, they said, "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?
How is it then that each of us hears them in his own native language?8And how is it that each one of us hears them in our own native language?
Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome,10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
both Jews and converts to Judaism; Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”11both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!"
Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”12All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"
But others mocked them and said, “They are drunk on new wine!”13But others jeered at the speakers, saying, "They are drunk on new wine!"
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice, and addressed the crowd: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen carefully to my words.14But Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: "You men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, know this and listen carefully to what I say.
These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It is only the third hour of the day!15In spite of what you think, these men are not drunk, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning.
No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:16But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:
‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.17And in the last days it will be,' God says, 'that I will pour out my Spirit on all people, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
Even on My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.19And I will perform wonders in the sky above and miraculous signs on the earth below, blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord.20The sun will be changed to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’21And then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
Men of Israel, listen to this message: Jesus of Nazareth was a man certified by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know.22"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds, wonders, and miraculous signs that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know--
He was delivered up by God’s set plan and foreknowledge, and you, by the hands of the lawless, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross.23this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.
But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for Him to be held in its clutches.24But God raised him up, having released him from the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.
David says about Him: ‘I saw the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.25For David says about him, 'I saw the Lord always in front of me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell in hope,26Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; my body also will live in hope,
because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.27because you will not leave my soul in Hades, nor permit your Holy One to experience decay.
You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of joy with your presence.'
Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.29"Brothers, I can speak confidently to you about our forefather David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne.30So then, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne,
Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did His body see decay.31David by foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did his body experience decay.
God has raised this Jesus to life, to which we are all witnesses.32This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.
Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.33So then, exalted to the right hand of God, and having received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, he has poured out what you both see and hear.
For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand34For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says, 'The Lord said to my lord, "Sit at my right hand
until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'
Therefore let all Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ!”36Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ."
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”37Now when they heard this, they were acutely distressed and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What should we do, brothers?"
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38Peter said to them, "Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
This promise belongs to you and your children and to all who are far off—to all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.”39For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself."
With many other words he testified, and he urged them, “Be saved from this corrupt generation.”40With many other words he testified and exhorted them saying, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation!"
Those who embraced his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to the believers that day.41So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added.
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.42They were devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs.43Reverential awe came over everyone, and many wonders and miraculous signs came about by the apostles.
All the believers were together and had everything in common.44All who believed were together and held everything in common,
Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need.45and they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need.
With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart,46Every day they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts, breaking bread from house to house, sharing their food with glad and humble hearts,
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.47praising God and having the good will of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every day those who were being saved.
