In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to Christ, fourteen generations.
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.18Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly.19Because Joseph, her husband to be, was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her, he intended to divorce her privately.
But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.20When he had contemplated this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”21She will give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:22This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled:
“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).23"Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call him Emmanuel," which means "God with us."
When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and embraced Mary as his wife.24When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord told him. He took his wife,
But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.25but did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth to a son, whom he named Jesus.
