Berean Study BibleNew Living Translation
You must carefully follow every commandment I am giving you today, so that you may live and multiply, and enter and possess the land that the LORD swore to give your fathers.1“Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors.
Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments.2Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.
He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.3Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothing did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.4For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell.
So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.5Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the LORD your God disciplines you for your own good.
Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, walking in His ways and fearing Him.6“So obey the commands of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and fearing him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks and fountains and springs that flow through the valleys and hills;7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land of flowing streams and pools of water, with fountains and springs that gush out in the valleys and hills.
a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey;8It is a land of wheat and barley; of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; of olive oil and honey.
a land where you will eat food without scarcity, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and whose hills are ready to be mined for copper.9It is a land where food is plentiful and nothing is lacking. It is a land where iron is as common as stone, and copper is abundant in the hills.
When you eat and are satisfied, you are to bless the LORD your God for the good land that He has given you.10When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
Be careful not to forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments and ordinances and statutes, which I am giving you this day.11“But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the LORD your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today.
Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses in which to dwell,12For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in,
and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all that you have is multiplied,13and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful!
then your heart will become proud, and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.14Do not become proud at that time and forget the LORD your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.
He led you through the vast and terrifying wilderness with its venomous snakes and scorpions, a thirsty and waterless land. He brought you water from the rock of flint.15Do not forget that he led you through the great and terrifying wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, where it was so hot and dry. He gave you water from the rock!
He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to prosper.16He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good.
You might say in your heart, “The power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.”17He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’
But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers even to this day.18Remember the LORD your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.
If you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods to worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.19“But I assure you of this: If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed.
Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.20Just as the LORD has destroyed other nations in your path, you also will be destroyed if you refuse to obey the LORD your God.
