Then Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury,1While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box.
and He saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.2Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins.
“Truly I tell you,” He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others.3 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them.
For they all contributed out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”4 For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.” Jesus Speaks about the Future
As some of the disciples were remarking how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and consecrated gifts, Jesus said,5Some of his disciples began talking about the majestic stonework of the Temple and the memorial decorations on the walls. But Jesus said,
“As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”6 “The time is coming when all these things will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!”
“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”7“Teacher,” they asked, “when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to take place?”
Jesus answered, “See to it that you are not deceived. For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.8He replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and saying, ‘The time has come!’ But don’t believe them.
When you hear of wars and rebellions, do not be alarmed. These things must happen first, but the end is not imminent.”9 And when you hear of wars and insurrections, don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place first, but the end won’t follow immediately.”
Then He told them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.10Then he added, “Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences in various places, along with fearful sights and great signs from heaven.11 There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and plagues in many lands, and there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from heaven.
But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. On account of My name they will deliver you to the synagogues and prisons, and they will bring you before kings and governors.12 “But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers.
This will be your opportunity to serve as witnesses.13 But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.
So make up your mind not to worry beforehand how to defend yourselves.14 So don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you,
For I will give you speech and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.15 for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!
You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death.16 Even those closest to you—your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends—will betray you. They will even kill some of you.
And you will be hated by everyone because of My name.17 And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.
Yet not even a hair of your head will perish.18 But not a hair of your head will perish!
By your patient endurance you will gain your souls.19 By standing firm, you will win your souls.
But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you will know that her desolation is near.20 “And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived.
Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country stay out of the city.21 Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. Those in Jerusalem must get out, and those out in the country should not return to the city.
For these are the days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.22 For those will be days of God’s vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled.
How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers! For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against this people.23 How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. For there will be disaster in the land and great anger against this people.
They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive into all the nations. And Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.24 They will be killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the period of the Gentiles comes to an end.
There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among the nations, bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the surging of the waves.25 “And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides.
Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.26 People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.27 Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory.
When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”28 So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”
Then Jesus told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees.29Then he gave them this illustration: “Notice the fig tree, or any other tree.
When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.30 When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near.
So also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.31 In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near.
Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.32 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things have taken place.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.33 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.
But watch yourselves, or your hearts will be weighed down by dissipation, drunkenness, and the worries of life—and that day will spring upon you suddenly like a snare.34 “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,
For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of all the earth.35 like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth.
So keep watch at all times, and pray that you may have the strength to escape all that is about to happen and to stand before the Son of Man.”36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”
Every day Jesus taught at the temple, but every evening He went out to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.37Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.
And early in the morning all the people would come to hear Him at the temple.38The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him.
