Berean Study BibleNew Living Translation
For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise against me.1Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me.
Deliver me from workers of iniquity, and save me from men of bloodshed.2Rescue me from these criminals; save me from these murderers.
See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire against me for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD.3They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, LORD, though I have not sinned or offended them.
For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me. Arise to help me, and take notice.4I have done nothing wrong, yet they prepare to attack me. Wake up! See what is happening and help me!
O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse Yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah5O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, wake up and punish those hostile nations. Show no mercy to wicked traitors. Interlude
They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city.6They come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets.
See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words from their lips: “For who can hear us?”7Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths; their words cut like swords. “After all, who can hear us?” they sneer.
But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations.8But LORD, you laugh at them. You scoff at all the hostile nations.
I will keep watch for You, O my strength, because You, O God, are my fortress.9You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, are my fortress.
My God of loving devotion will come to meet me; God will let me stare down my foes.10In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies.
Do not kill them, or my people will forget. Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield.11Don’t kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons; stagger them with your power, and bring them to their knees, O Lord our shield.
By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride, in the curses and lies they utter.12Because of the sinful things they say, because of the evil that is on their lips, let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their lies.
Consume them in wrath; consume them till they are no more, so it may be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah13Destroy them in your anger! Wipe them out completely! Then the whole world will know that God reigns in Israel. Interlude
They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city.14My enemies come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets.
They scavenge for food, and growl if they are not satisfied.15They scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied.
But I will sing of Your strength and proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning. For You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.16But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.
To You, O my strength, I sing praises, for You, O God, are my fortress, my God of loving devotion.17O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love.
