For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise against me.1For the choir director; set to Al-tashheth. A Mikhtam of David, when Saul sent men and they watched the house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; Set me securely on high away from those who rise up against me.
Deliver me from workers of iniquity, and save me from men of bloodshed.2Deliver me from those who do iniquity And save me from men of bloodshed.
See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire against me for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD.3For behold, they have set an ambush for my life; Fierce men launch an attack against me, Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O LORD,
For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me. Arise to help me, and take notice.4For no guilt of mine, they run and set themselves against me. Arouse Yourself to help me, and see!
O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse Yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah5You, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, Awake to punish all the nations; Do not be gracious to any who are treacherous in iniquity. Selah.
They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city.6They return at evening, they howl like a dog, And go around the city.
See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words from their lips: “For who can hear us?”7Behold, they belch forth with their mouth; Swords are in their lips, For, they say, "Who hears?"
But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations.8But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations.
I will keep watch for You, O my strength, because You, O God, are my fortress.9Because of his strength I will watch for You, For God is my stronghold.
My God of loving devotion will come to meet me; God will let me stare down my foes.10My God in His lovingkindness will meet me; God will let me look triumphantly upon my foes.
Do not kill them, or my people will forget. Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield.11Do not slay them, or my people will forget; Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield.
By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride, in the curses and lies they utter.12On account of the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips, Let them even be caught in their pride, And on account of curses and lies which they utter.
Consume them in wrath; consume them till they are no more, so it may be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah13Destroy them in wrath, destroy them that they may be no more; That men may know that God rules in Jacob To the ends of the earth. Selah.
They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city.14They return at evening, they howl like a dog, And go around the city.
They scavenge for food, and growl if they are not satisfied.15They wander about for food And growl if they are not satisfied.
But I will sing of Your strength and proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning. For You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.16But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength; Yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning, For You have been my stronghold And a refuge in the day of my distress.
To You, O my strength, I sing praises, for You, O God, are my fortress, my God of loving devotion.17O my strength, I will sing praises to You; For God is my stronghold, the God who shows me lovingkindness.
