Now Joseph had been taken to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guards, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.1Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.
The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master.2The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made everything he did successful,3Now his master saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.
Joseph found favor with his master and became his personal attendant. Potiphar also put him in charge of his household and placed all that he owned under his authority.4So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge.
From the time that he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The LORD's blessing was on all that he owned, in his house and in his fields.5It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house on account of Joseph; thus the LORD'S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.
He left all that he owned under Joseph's authority; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome.6So he left everything he owned in Joseph's charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
After some time his master's wife looked longingly at Joseph and said, "Sleep with me."7It came about after these events that his master's wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, "Lie with me."
But he refused. "Look," he said to his master's wife, "with me here my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has put all that he owns under my authority.8But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge.
No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this immense evil, and how could I sin against God?"9"There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?"
Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her.10As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.
Now one day he went into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there.11Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside.
She grabbed him by his garment and said, "Sleep with me!" But leaving his garment in her hand, he escaped and ran outside.12She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.
When she saw that he had left his garment with her and had run outside,13When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,
she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "my husband brought a Hebrew man to make fools of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, and I screamed as loud as I could.14she called to the men of her household and said to them, "See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed.
When he heard me screaming for help, he left his garment beside me and ran outside."15"When he heard that I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside."
She put Joseph's garment beside her until his master came home.16So she left his garment beside her until his master came home.
Then she told him the same story: "The Hebrew slave you brought to us came to make a fool of me,17Then she spoke to him with these words, "The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me;
but when I screamed for help, he left his garment beside me and ran outside."18and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside."
When his master heard the story his wife told him--"These are the things your slave did to me"--he was furious19Now when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, "This is what your slave did to me," his anger burned.
and had him thrown into prison, where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph was there in prison.20So Joseph's master took him and put him into the jail, the place where the king's prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.
But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him. He granted him favor with the prison warden.21But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.
The warden put all the prisoners who were in the prison under Joseph's authority, and he was responsible for everything that was done there.22The chief jailer committed to Joseph's charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.
The warden did not bother with anything under Joseph's authority, because the LORD was with him, and the LORD made everything that he did successful.23The chief jailer did not supervise anything under Joseph's charge because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made to prosper.
