All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, "Here we are, your own flesh and blood.1All Israel joined David at Hebron and said, "Look, we are your very flesh and blood!
Even previously when Saul was king, you were leading Israel out to battle and bringing us back. The LORD your God also said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over my people Israel.'"2In the past, even when Saul was king, you were Israel's commanding general. The LORD your God said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel; you will rule over my people Israel.'"
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. David made a covenant with them at Hebron in the LORD's presence, and they anointed David king over Israel, in keeping with the LORD's word through Samuel.3When all the leaders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, David made an agreement with them in Hebron before the LORD. They anointed David king over Israel, just as the LORD had announced through Samuel.
David and all Israel marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); the Jebusites who inhabited the land were there.4David and the whole Israelite army advanced to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). (The Jebusites, the land's original inhabitants, lived there.)
The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You will never get in here." Yet David did capture the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David.5The residents of Jebus said to David, "You cannot invade this place!" But David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).
David said, "Whoever is the first to kill a Jebusite will become chief commander." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became the chief.6David said, "Whoever attacks the Jebusites first will become commanding general!" So Joab son of Zeruiah attacked first and became commander.
Then David took up residence in the stronghold; therefore, it was called the city of David.7David lived in the fortress; for this reason it is called the City of David.
He built up the city all the way around, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding parts, and Joab restored the rest of the city.8He built up the city around it, from the terrace to the surrounding walls; Joab restored the rest of the city.
David steadily grew more powerful, and the LORD of Armies was with him.9David's power steadily grew, for the LORD who commands armies was with him.
The following were the chiefs of David's warriors who, together with all Israel, strongly supported him in his reign to make him king according to the LORD's word about Israel.10These were the leaders of David's warriors who helped establish and stabilize his rule over all Israel, in accordance with the LORD's word.
This is the list of David's warriors: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the Thirty; he wielded his spear against three hundred and killed them at one time.11This is the list of David's warriors: Jashobeam, a Hacmonite, was head of the officers. He killed three hundred men with his spear in a single battle.
After him, Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite was one of the three warriors.12Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite. He was one of the three elite warriors.
He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines had gathered there for battle. There was a portion of a field full of barley, where the troops had fled from the Philistines.13He was with David in Pas Dammim when the Philistines assembled there for battle. In an area of the field that was full of barley, the army retreated before the Philistines,
But Eleazar and David took their stand in the middle of the field and defended it. They killed the Philistines, and the LORD gave them a great victory.14but then they made a stand in the middle of that area. They defended it and defeated the Philistines; the LORD gave them a great victory.
Three of the thirty chief men went down to David, to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while the Philistine army was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.15Three of the thirty leaders went down to David at the rocky cliff at the cave of Adullam, while a Philistine force was camped in the Valley of Rephaim.
At that time David was in the stronghold, and a Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.16David was in the stronghold at the time, while a Philistine garrison was in Bethlehem.
David was extremely thirsty and said, "If only someone would bring me water to drink from the well at the city gate of Bethlehem!"17David was thirsty and said, "How I wish someone would give me some water to drink from the cistern in Bethlehem near the city gate!"
So the Three broke through the Philistine camp and drew water from the well at the gate of Bethlehem. They brought it back to David, but he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out to the LORD.18So the three elite warriors broke through the Philistine forces and drew some water from the cistern in Bethlehem near the city gate. They carried it back to David, but David refused to drink it. He poured it out as a drink offering to the LORD
David said, "I would never do such a thing in the presence of my God! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?" For they brought it at the risk of their lives. So he would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three warriors.19and said, "God forbid that I should do this! Should I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?" Because they risked their lives to bring it to him, he refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three elite warriors.
Abishai, Joab's brother, was the leader of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men and killed them, gaining a reputation among the Three.20Abishai the brother of Joab was head of the three elite warriors. He killed three hundred men with his spear and gained fame along with the three elite warriors.
He was more honored than the Three and became their commander even though he did not become one of the Three.21From the three he was given double honor and he became their officer, even though he was not one of them.
Benaiah son of Jehoiada was the son of a brave man from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. Benaiah killed two sons of Ariel of Moab, and he went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.22Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a brave warrior from Kabzeel who performed great exploits. He struck down the two sons of Ariel of Moab; he also went down and killed a lion inside a cistern on a snowy day.
He also killed an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. Even though the Egyptian had a spear in his hand like a weaver's beam, Benaiah went down to him with a club, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and then killed him with his own spear.23He even killed an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. The Egyptian had a spear as big as the crossbeam of a weaver's loom; Benaiah attacked him with a club. He grabbed the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear.
These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who had a reputation among the three warriors.24Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who gained fame along with the three elite warriors.
He was the most honored of the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. David put him in charge of his bodyguard.25He received honor from the thirty warriors, though he was not one of the three elite warriors. David put him in charge of his bodyguard.
