LORD, do not punish me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.1A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury!
For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down on me.2For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down.
There is no soundness in my body because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.3My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin.
For my iniquities have flooded over my head; they are a burden too heavy for me to bear.4For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.
My wounds are foul and festering because of my foolishness.5My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins.
I am bent over and brought very low; all day long I go around in mourning.6I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning.
For my insides are full of burning pain, and there is no soundness in my body.7For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick.
I am faint and severely crushed; I groan because of the anguish of my heart.8I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel.
Lord, my every desire is in front of you; my sighing is not hidden from you.9O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you.
My heart races, my strength leaves me, and even the light of my eyes has faded.10My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see.
My loved ones and friends stand back from my affliction, and my relatives stand at a distance.11Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away.
Those who intend to kill me set traps, and those who want to harm me threaten to destroy me; they plot treachery all day long.12Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things.
I am like a deaf person; I do not hear. I am like a speechless person who does not open his mouth.13But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak.
I am like a man who does not hear and has no arguments in his mouth.14I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense.
For I put my hope in you, LORD; you will answer me, my Lord, my God.15Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God!
For I said, "Don't let them rejoice over me--those who are arrogant toward me when I stumble."16I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me.
For I am about to fall, and my pain is constantly with me.17For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain.
So I confess my iniquity; I am anxious because of my sin.18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins.
But my enemies are vigorous and powerful; many hate me for no reason.19But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me.
Those who repay evil for good attack me for pursuing good.20They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me.
LORD, do not abandon me; my God, do not be far from me.21Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me!
Hurry to help me, my Lord, my salvation.22Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer!
