He looked up and saw the rich dropping their offerings into the temple treasury.1While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box.
He also saw a poor widow dropping in two tiny coins.2Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins.
"Truly I tell you," he said. "This poor widow has put in more than all of them.3 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them.
For all these people have put in gifts out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on."4 For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.” Jesus Speaks about the Future
As some were talking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said,5Some of his disciples began talking about the majestic stonework of the Temple and the memorial decorations on the walls. But Jesus said,
"These things that you see--the days will come when not one stone will be left on another that will not be thrown down."6 “The time is coming when all these things will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!”
"Teacher," they asked him, "so when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?"7“Teacher,” they asked, “when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to take place?”
Then he said, "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Don't follow them.8He replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and saying, ‘The time has come!’ But don’t believe them.
When you hear of wars and rebellions, don't be alarmed. Indeed, it is necessary that these things take place first, but the end won't come right away."9 And when you hear of wars and insurrections, don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place first, but the end won’t follow immediately.”
Then he told them: "Nation will be raised up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.10Then he added, “Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be violent earthquakes, and famines and plagues in various places, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven.11 There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and plagues in many lands, and there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from heaven.
But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you. They will hand you over to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.12 “But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers.
This will give you an opportunity to bear witness.13 But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.
Therefore make up your minds not to prepare your defense ahead of time,14 So don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you,
for I will give you such words and a wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.15 for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!
You will even be betrayed by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will kill some of you.16 Even those closest to you—your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends—will betray you. They will even kill some of you.
You will be hated by everyone because of my name,17 And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.
but not a hair of your head will be lost.18 But not a hair of your head will perish!
By your endurance, gain your lives.19 By standing firm, you will win your souls.
"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that its desolation has come near.20 “And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived.
Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those inside the city must leave it, and those who are in the country must not enter it,21 Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. Those in Jerusalem must get out, and those out in the country should not return to the city.
because these are days of vengeance to fulfill all the things that are written.22 For those will be days of God’s vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled.
Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days, for there will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.23 How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. For there will be disaster in the land and great anger against this people.
They will be killed by the sword and be led captive into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.24 They will be killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the period of the Gentiles comes to an end.
"Then there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and there will be anguish on the earth among nations bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the waves.25 “And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides.
People will faint from fear and expectation of the things that are coming on the world, because the powers of the heavens will be shaken.26 People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.27 Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory.
But when these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near."28 So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”
Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.29Then he gave them this illustration: “Notice the fig tree, or any other tree.
As soon as they put out leaves you can see for yourselves and recognize that summer is already near.30 When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near.31 In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near.
Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all things take place.32 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things have taken place.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.33 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.
"Be on your guard, so that your minds are not dulled from carousing, drunkenness, and worries of life, or that day will come on you unexpectedly34 “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,
like a trap. For it will come on all who live on the face of the whole earth.35 like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth.
But be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place and to stand before the Son of Man."36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”
During the day, he was teaching in the temple, but in the evening he would go out and spend the night on what is called the Mount of Olives.37Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.
Then all the people would come early in the morning to hear him in the temple.38The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him.
