Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek.1Then he went on to Derbe and Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman, but his father was a Greek.
He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium.2The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him.
Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.3Paul wanted Timothy to go with him, so he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, since they all knew that his father was a Greek.
As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem.4As they traveled through the towns, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem for them to observe.
So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily.5So the churches were strengthened in the faith and increased in number daily.
And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.6They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia and were prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in Asia.
And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.7When they came to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.
So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas.8So, bypassing Mysia, they came down to Troas.
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”9During the night a vision appeared to Paul: A Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, "Cross over to Macedonia and help us!"
And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.10After he had seen the vision, we immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to evangelize them.
So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis,11Then, setting sail from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis,
and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days.12and from there to Philippi, a Roman colony, which is a leading city of that district of Macedonia. We stayed in that city for a number of days.
And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.13On the Sabbath day we went outside the city gate by the river, where we thought there was a place of prayer. We sat down and spoke to the women gathered there.
One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.14A woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was spoken by Paul.
And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us.15After she and her household were baptized, she urged us, "If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.
As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling.16Once, as we were on our way to prayer, a slave girl met us who had a spirit of prediction. She made a large profit for her owners by fortune-telling.
She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.”17As she followed Paul and us she cried out, "These men, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation, are the slaves of the Most High God."
And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.18And she did this for many days. But Paul was greatly aggravated and turning to the spirit, said, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out right away.
But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.19When her owners saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.
And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city.20Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said, "These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jews
They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.”21and are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice."
The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods.22Then the mob joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.
And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely.23After they had inflicted many blows on them, they threw them in jail, ordering the jailer to keep them securely guarded.
Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.24Receiving such an order, he put them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened.26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's chains came loose.
When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.27When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison open, he drew his sword and was going to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped.
But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.”28But Paul called out in a loud voice, "Don't harm yourself, because all of us are here!"
And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas.29Then the jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.
Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”30Then he escorted them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”31So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."
And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house.32Then they spoke the message of the Lord to him along with everyone in his house.
And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family.33He took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds. Right away he and all his family were baptized.
Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.34He brought them into his house, set a meal before them, and rejoiced because he had believed God with his entire household.
But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.”35When daylight came, the chief magistrates sent the police to say, "Release those men!"
And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.”36The jailer reported these words to Paul: "The magistrates have sent orders for you to be released. So come out now and go in peace."
But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.”37But Paul said to them, "They beat us in public without a trial, although we are Roman citizens, and threw us in jail. And now are they going to smuggle us out secretly? Certainly not! On the contrary, let them come themselves and escort us out!"
The police reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens.38Then the police reported these words to the magistrates. They were afraid when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.
So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city.39So they came and apologized to them, and escorting them out, they urged them to leave town.
So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.40After leaving the jail, they came to Lydia's house where they saw and encouraged the brothers, and departed.
