But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.1But as for you, teach what is consistent with healthy doctrine.
Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.2Older men are to be sober, serious, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance.
Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,3Likewise, older women are to show their reverence for God by their behavior. They are not to be gossips or addicted to alcohol, but to be examples of goodness.
and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,4They should encourage the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children,
to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.5to be sensible and pure, to manage their households, to be kind, and to submit themselves to their husbands. Otherwise, the word of God may be discredited.
Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.6Likewise, encourage the younger men to be sensible.
Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity,7Always set an example for others by doing good actions. Teach with integrity and dignity.
and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.8Use wholesome speech that cannot be condemned. Then any opponent will be ashamed because he cannot say anything bad about us.
Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative,9Slaves are to submit to their masters in everything, aiming to please them and not argue with them
not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.10or steal from them. Instead, they are to show complete and perfect loyalty, so that in every way they may make the teaching about God our Savior more attractive.
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people.
training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,12It trains us to renounce ungodly living and worldly passions so that we might live sensible, honest, and godly lives in the present age
waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,13as we wait for the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior, Jesus the Messiah.
who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.14He gave himself for us to set us free from every wrong and to cleanse us so that we could be his special people who are enthusiastic about doing good deeds.
Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.15These are the things you should teach. Encourage and refute with full authority. Do not let anyone look down on you.
