Psalm 38
ESV Parallel NET [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionNET Bible
O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath!1A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury!
For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me.2For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down.
There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.3My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin.
For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.4For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.
My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness,5My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins.
I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning.6I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning.
For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.7For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick.
I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart.8I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel.
O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.9O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you.
My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me.10My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see.
My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off.11Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away.
Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long.12Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things.
But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth.13But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak.
I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes.14I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense.
But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.15Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God!
For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!”16I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me.
For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me.17For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain.
I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins.
But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully.19But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me.
Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.20They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me.
Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me!21Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me!
Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!22Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer!
