Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
Therefore, as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of the Messiah and also a participant in the glory about to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you: 1So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed:
Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but freely, according to God's will; not for the money but eagerly; 2shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 3not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 4And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. 5Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time,6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you. 7casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 8Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Resist him and be firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world. 9Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little.10And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
The dominion belongs to Him forever. Amen. 11To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
I have written you this brief letter through Silvanus (I know him to be a faithful brother) to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Take your stand in it! 12By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.
The church in Babylon, also chosen, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son. 13She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son.
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. 14Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
