Therefore, as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of the Messiah and also a participant in the glory about to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you: 1So as your fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings and as one who shares in the glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders among you:
Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but freely, according to God's will; not for the money but eagerly; 2Give a shepherd's care to God's flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God's direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly.
not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 3And do not lord it over those entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock.
And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 4Then when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that never fades away.
In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. 5In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time,6And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand
casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you. 7by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you.
Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 8Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.
Resist him and be firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world. 9Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering.
Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little.10And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
The dominion belongs to Him forever. Amen. 11To him belongs the power forever. Amen.
I have written you this brief letter through Silvanus (I know him to be a faithful brother) to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Take your stand in it! 12Through Silvanus, whom I know to be a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, in order to encourage you and testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
The church in Babylon, also chosen, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son. 13The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you, and so does Mark, my son.
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. 14Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
