Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, equip yourselves also with the same resolve--because the one who suffered in the flesh has finished with sin--1So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin,
in order to live the remaining time in the flesh, no longer for human desires, but for God's will.2in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.
For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the pagans choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry. 3For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.
So they are surprised that you don't plunge with them into the same flood of wild living--and they slander you.4So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.
They will give an account to the One who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.5They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.
For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead, so that, although they might be judged by men in the fleshly realm, they might live by God in the spiritual realm. 6Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God's standards.
Now the end of all things is near; therefore, be serious and disciplined for prayer. 7For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer.
Above all, maintain an intense love for each other, since love covers a multitude of sins.8Above all keep your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 9Show hospitality to one another without complaining.
Based on the gift each one has received, use it to serve others, as good managers of the varied grace of God. 10Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God.
If anyone speaks, it should be as one who speaks God's words; if anyone serves, it should be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. 11Whoever speaks, let it be with God's words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
Dear friends, don't be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you.12Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.
Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of the Messiah, so that you may also rejoice with great joy at the revelation of His glory. 13But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad.
If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.
None of you, however, should suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler.15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.
But if anyone suffers as a "Christian," he should not be ashamed but should glorify God in having that name. 16But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name.
For the time has come for judgment to begin with God's household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God? 17For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God?
And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? 18And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners?
So those who suffer according to God's will should, while doing what is good, entrust themselves to a faithful Creator. 19So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good.
