Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To the temporary residents dispersed in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen1From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those temporarily residing abroad (in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, the province of Asia, and Bithynia) who are chosen
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you. 2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by being set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with Jesus Christ's blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure!
Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
and into an inheritance that is imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 4that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you,
You are being protected by God's power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.5who by God's power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials6This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials.
so that the genuineness of your faith--more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire--may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.7Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold--gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away--and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, 8You have not seen him, but you love him. You do not see him now but you believe in him, and so you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,
because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 9because you are attaining the goal of your faith--the salvation of your souls.
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated. 10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who predicted the grace that would come to you searched and investigated carefully.
They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the messianic sufferings and the glories that would follow.11They probed into what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified beforehand about the sufferings appointed for Christ and his subsequent glory.
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Angels desire to look into these things. 12They were shown that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things now announced to you through those who proclaimed the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--things angels long to catch a glimpse of.
Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be serious and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13Therefore, get your minds ready for action by being fully sober, and set your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance. 14Like obedient children, do not comply with the evil urges you used to follow in your ignorance,
But as the One who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct; 15but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct,
for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy. 16for it is written, "You shall be holy, because I am holy."
And if you address as Father the One who judges impartially based on each one's work, you are to conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your temporary residence. 17And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one's work, live out the time of your temporary residence here in reverence.
For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,18You know that from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors you were ransomed--not by perishable things like silver or gold,
but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 19but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ.
He was chosen before the foundation of the world but was revealed at the end of the times for you20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was manifested in these last times for your sake.
who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. 21Through him you now trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
By obedience to the truth, having purified yourselves for sincere love of the brothers, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,22You have purified your souls by obeying the truth in order to show sincere mutual love. So love one another earnestly from a pure heart.
since you have been born again--not of perishable seed but of imperishable--through the living and enduring word of God.23You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.
For All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 24For all flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of the grass; the grass withers and the flower falls off,
but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word that was preached as the gospel to you. 25but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.
