There was another famine in the land in addition to the one that had occurred in Abraham's time. And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, at Gerar.1There was a famine in the land, subsequent to the earlier famine that occurred in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines at Gerar.
The LORD appeared to him and said, "Do not go down to Egypt. Live in the land that I tell you about;2The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, "Do not go down to Egypt; settle down in the land that I will point out to you.
stay in this land as a foreigner, and I will be with you and bless you. For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring, and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.3Stay in this land. Then I will be with you and will bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will fulfill the solemn promise I made to your father Abraham.
I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky, I will give your offspring all these lands, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring,4I will multiply your descendants so they will be as numerous as the stars in the sky, and I will give them all these lands. All the nations of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using the name of your descendants.
because Abraham listened to My voice and kept My mandate, My commands, My statutes, and My instructions."5All this will come to pass because Abraham obeyed me and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."
So Isaac settled in Gerar. 6So Isaac settled in Gerar.
When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say "my wife," thinking, "The men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is a beautiful woman."7When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he replied, "She is my sister." He was afraid to say, "She is my wife," for he thought to himself, "The men of this place will kill me to get Rebekah because she is very beautiful."
When Isaac had been there for some time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down from the window and was surprised to see Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 8After Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines happened to look out a window and observed Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.
Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, "So she is really your wife! How could you say, 'She is my sister?" Isaac answered him, "Because I thought I might die on account of her." 9So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, "She is really your wife! Why did you say, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac replied, "Because I thought someone might kill me to get her."
Then Abimelech said, "What is this you've done to us? One of the people could easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us."10Then Abimelech exclaimed, "What in the world have you done to us? One of the men might easily have had sexual relations with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us!"
So Abimelech warned all the people with these words: "Whoever harms this man or his wife will certainly die." 11So Abimelech commanded all the people, "Whoever touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death."
Isaac sowed seed in that land, and in that year he reaped a hundred times what was sown. The LORD blessed him,12When Isaac planted in that land, he reaped in the same year a hundred times what he had sown, because the LORD blessed him.
and the man became rich and kept getting richer until he was very wealthy. 13The man became wealthy. His influence continued to grow until he became very prominent.
He had flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and many slaves, and the Philistines were envious of him. 14He had so many sheep and cattle and such a great household of servants that the Philistines became jealous of him.
The Philistines stopped up all the wells that his father's slaves had dug in the days of his father Abraham, filling them with dirt. 15So the Philistines took dirt and filled up all the wells that his father's servants had dug back in the days of his father Abraham.
And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Leave us, for you are much too powerful for us." 16Then Abimelech said to Isaac, "Leave us and go elsewhere, for you have become much more powerful than we are."
So Isaac left there, camped in the Valley of Gerar, and lived there. 17So Isaac left there and settled in the Gerar Valley.
Isaac reopened the water wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and that the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died. He gave them the same names his father had given them. 18Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug back in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after Abraham died. Isaac gave these wells the same names his father had given them.
Then Isaac's slaves dug in the valley and found a well of spring water there. 19When Isaac's servants dug in the valley and discovered a well with fresh flowing water there,
But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen and said, "The water is ours!" So he named the well Quarrel because they quarreled with him.20the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water belongs to us!" So Isaac named the well Esek because they argued with him about it.
Then they dug another well and quarreled over that one also, so he named it Hostility.21His servants dug another well, but they quarreled over it too, so Isaac named it Sitnah.
He moved from there and dug another, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Open Spaces and said, "For now the LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land." 22Then he moved away from there and dug another well. They did not quarrel over it, so Isaac named it Rehoboth, saying, "For now the LORD has made room for us, and we will prosper in the land."
From there he went up to Beer-sheba, 23From there Isaac went up to Beer Sheba.
and the LORD appeared to him that night and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your offspring because of My servant Abraham." 24The LORD appeared to him that night and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham."
So he built an altar there, called on the name of Yahweh, and pitched his tent there. Isaac's slaves also dug a well there. 25Then Isaac built an altar there and worshiped the LORD. He pitched his tent there, and his servants dug a well.
Now Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army.26Now Abimelech had come to him from Gerar along with Ahuzzah his friend and Phicol the commander of his army.
Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me? You hated me and sent me away from you." 27Isaac asked them, "Why have you come to me? You hate me and sent me away from you."
They replied, "We have clearly seen how the LORD has been with you. We think there should be an oath between two parties--between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you: 28They replied, "We could plainly see that the LORD is with you. So we decided there should be a pact between us--between us and you. Allow us to make a treaty with you
You will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have only done what was good to you, sending you away in peace. You are now blessed by the LORD." 29so that you will not do us any harm, just as we have not harmed you, but have always treated you well before sending you away in peace. Now you are blessed by the LORD."
So he prepared a banquet for them, and they ate and drank. 30So Isaac held a feast for them and they celebrated.
They got up early in the morning and swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left him in peace. 31Early in the morning the men made a treaty with each other. Isaac sent them off; they separated on good terms.
On that same day Isaac's slaves came to tell him about the well they had dug, saying to him, "We have found water!"32That day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had dug. "We've found water," they reported.
He called it Sheba. Therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba to this day. 33So he named it Shibah; that is why the name of the city has been Beer Sheba to this day.
When Esau was 40 years old, he took as his wives Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.34When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, as well as Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.
They made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah. 35They caused Isaac and Rebekah great anxiety.
