Then Abimelech said to Isaac,

Abimelech was likely a royal title among the Philistines, as Pharaoh was in Egypt. This king of Gerar appears to have succeeded the Abimelech who dealt with Abraham. Isaac had come to Philistine territory during famine, as Abraham had before him, but his growing household, flocks, servants, and wealth made him a significant presence in the region.

Verse 16. - And Abimelech said unto Isaac (almost leading to the suspicion that the Philistine monarch had instigated the outbreak of hostilities amongst his people), Go from us (a royal command rather than a friendly advice); for thou art much mightier than we. The same apprehension of the growing numbers and strength of Isaac's descendants in Egypt took possession of the heart of Pharaoh, and led to their enslavement (vide Exodus 1:9).

Abimelech’s order reveals three truths: the world notices when God blesses His people; prosperity may provoke fear and rejection; and even forced separation becomes a vehicle for God to advance His purposes. Isaac’s literal, historical experience assures believers today that God’s covenant faithfulness is undiminished, turning opposition into opportunity and making His power unmistakable to all who watch.
