After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, because he didn't want to travel in Judea, since the Jewish leaders there were trying to kill him. 1After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.
Now the Jewish Festival of Tents was approaching. 2However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
So his brothers told him, "You should leave this place and go to Judea, so that your disciples can see the actions that you're doing, 3So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.
since no one acts in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you're going to do these things, you should reveal yourself to the world!" 4For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”
Not even his brothers believed in him.5For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.
Jesus told them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.6Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its actions are evil. 7The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.
Go up to the festival yourselves. I am not going to this festival yet, because my time hasn't fully come yet." 8Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”
After saying this, he remained in Galilee.9Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.
But after his brothers had gone up to the festival, he went up himself, not openly but, as it were, in secret. 10But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.
The Jewish leaders kept looking for him at the festival, asking, "Where is that man?" 11So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”
And there was a great deal of discussion about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," while others were saying, "No, he is deceiving the crowds!" 12Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”
Nevertheless, no one would speak openly about him because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. 13Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.
Halfway through the festival, Jesus went up to the Temple and began teaching. 14About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.
The Jewish leaders were astonished and remarked, "How can this man be so educated when he has never gone to school?"15The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?”
Jesus replied to them, "My teaching is not mine but comes from the one who sent me. 16“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.
If anyone wants to do his will, he'll know whether this teaching is from God or whether I'm speaking on my own. 17If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
The one who speaks on his own seeks his own praise. But the one who seeks the praise of him who sent him is genuine, and there's nothing false in him. 18He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.
Moses gave you the Law, didn't he? Yet none of you is keeping the Law. Why are you trying to kill me?"19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”
The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"20“You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”
Jesus answered them, "I performed one action, and all of you are astonished. 21Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
Moses gave you circumcision—not that it is from Moses, but from the Patriarchs—and so you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 22But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)
If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man perfectly well on the Sabbath? 23If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?
Stop judging by appearances, but judge with righteous judgment!"24Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”
Then some of the people of Jerusalem began saying, "This is the man they are trying to kill, isn't it? 25Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
And look, he is speaking in public, and they are not saying anything to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Messiah?26Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?
We know where this man comes from. But when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he comes from."27But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”
At this point Jesus, still teaching in the Temple, shouted, "So you know me and know where I've come from? I haven't come on my own accord. But the one who sent me is true, and he's the one you don't know. 28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,
I know him because I've come from him, and he sent me."29but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
Then the Jewish leaders tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come. 30So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
However, many in the crowd believed in him. They kept saying, "When the Messiah comes, he won't do more signs than this man has done, will he?"31Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”
The Pharisees heard the crowd debating these things about him, so the high priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest Jesus. 32When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.
Then Jesus said, "I'll be with you only a little while longer, and then I'm going back to the one who sent me. 33So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
You'll look for me but won't find me. And where I am, you cannot come."34You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
Then the Jewish leaders asked one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we won't be able to find him? Surely he's not going to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he? 35At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
What does this statement mean that he said, 'You'll look for me but won't find me,' and, 'Where I am, you cannot come'?"36What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! 37On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have rivers of living water flowing from his heart." 38Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’ ”
Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who were believing in him were to receive, because the Spirit was not yet present and Jesus had not yet been glorified.39He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
When they heard these words, some in the crowd were saying, "This really is the Prophet," 40On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
while others were saying, "This is the Messiah!" But some were saying, "The Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does he? 41Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?
Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah is from David's family and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?" 42Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
So there was a division in the crowd because of him. 43So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.
Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.
Then the officers returned to the high priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him?"45Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like that!"46“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.
Then the Pharisees replied to them, "You haven't been deceived, too, have you? 47“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.
None of the authorities or Pharisees has believed in him, have they? 48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
But this mob that does not know the Law—they're under a curse!"49But this crowd that does not know the law, they are under a curse.”
One of their own, Nicodemus (the man who had previously met with Jesus), asked them, 50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,
"Surely our Law does not condemn a person without first hearing from him and finding out what he is doing, does it?"51“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”
They answered him, "You aren't from Galilee, too, are you? Search and see that no prophet comes from Galilee." 52“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”
Then all of them went to their own homes.53Then each went to his own home.
